In an effort to establish a holiday to honor and celebrate members of the U.S. military, President Harry S. Truman led the effort to create Armed Forces Day. The celebration was officially declared on August 31st, 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson as a holiday to honor members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Today, we celebrate Armed Forces Day every 3rd Saturday in May by uniting as a country to thank those who serve!
We wanted to get a head start on celebrating Armed Forces Day this weekend by sharing the success story of Maurice Welton, a proud veteran who happens to be one of our amazing Edible Arrangements® franchisees!
Welton is truly an inspiration to individuals and business owners alike. He served his first 4 years in the U.S. Army as a cook, and another two years as a food inspector. While serving in the military, he loved exploring new places, meeting new people, and learning about other cultures. He had the opportunity to serve in many places including Amsterdam and Rotterdam in Holland – two of his favorites! During his first 4 years as a cook, he prepared meals for 700-1000 soldiers, 3 times a day. Welton preaches the importance of preparing and planning ahead of time – 2 skills that he uses while running his business today. During his military experience, Welton embraced being a leader of a cohesive team, and learned many skills that have helped him run a successful business.
After his time in the military, Welton began his journey with Edible Arrangements® when he was watching a segment on The Big Idea featuring Edible® founders Tariq and Kamran Farid. He was intrigued by the company’s unique products, and the company’s inspiring philosophy to do what it takes to WOW every customer. He went on to open his first store, and attend an Edible Arrangements® Discovery Day in 2006, where he met Edible® CEO and Founder Tariq Farid.
“Thank goodness I opened an Edible Arrangements® – it is the greatest gift I have ever given myself! 10 years later, and I am still amazed and overwhelmed by the product, people, and process of this company. The past 10 years have been a rollercoaster, but I would not want to be on any other rollercoaster than this one. The thrill is still alive!”
Today, Welton has grown to operate 5 stores all located in South Texas. His first store, which Welton refers to as “the crown jewel of South Texas,” was opened in 2007 in McAllen, TX. Welton is approaching his 10th anniversary, and he couldn’t be more grateful and proud of how much he has grown as a business owner and as an individual.
We are so honored to work with Maurice and are thankful for his military service. To all those who are serving, and have served, thank you for your service!
