We look forward to spending time outside and enjoying some fresh air. Finally, we look forward to laughing with our friends and family. Or, if you’re not sure about the parade options near your, then do a quick Google search for “memorial day parade” and the results will show all of the local events.
2 – Gather family and friends for a Memorial Day weekend cookout.
Memorial Day BBQs are the perfect opportunity for you to gather with friends and family! For example, set a patriotic mood by decorating your home and yard with festive red, white & blue accessories. Plus, don’t forget to tie a patriotic theme into your menu, too!
Additionally, during your celebration, take a moment to honor the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3:00pm on Memorial Day. This is an awesome way to incorporate celebrating the true meaning of Memorial Day while spending quality time with your friends and family.
3 – Donate your time.
Volunteering your time is one of the best ways to give back for Memorial Day AND all year-round! Prior to Memorial Day weekend, contact your local Veterans Service Center to see if they need volunteers. You and your family can bring some sweet treats to share while enjoying some of your favorite books, movies, and games. Just spending time with you is sure to make their day!
4 – Design care packages for military members.
Through programs such as Operation Gratitude, you and your family can design care packages and send them to active members of the military who are deployed overseas. Some great things to include are supplies, personal care products, homemade cards, and crafts. This Memorial Day weekend, take the time to design some care packages for active military members. For example, this activity is a great way for you to thank our country’s service members and make memories with every member of your family!
5 – Surprise the active members of the military and veterans in your community.
Do you know those who have served or are currently serving in your neighborhood? Pay them a visit and surprise them with a thoughtful gift and a hand-made card! To help, See Vanessa Craft share a great patriotic kids activity that teaches about community and kindness.
“In the summer we typically pick a few random acts of kindness projects that we can do as a family. This summer we decided to make red, white and blue flag inspired cards for veterans with a note of appreciation inside. These handprint flag cards are a great way to say thank you to our military men and women!”
This will put a smile on their face while you thank them for their service.
We hope you and your family have some fun in the sun this Memorial Day Weekend, but don’t forget to take a step back to remember the true meaning of this amazing holiday!
