A 60th birthday is a major life milestone. For some, it may mark the start of retirement. However, today’s 60-year-olds are leading vibrant, active lifestyles, and this milestone birthday is deserving of a big celebration.
What that ideal celebration looks like, however, depends on the birthday person’s personality, likes, and interests. If they hate being the center of attention, a surprise party probably isn’t the best idea. But for a 60-year-old who loves going out on the town for a fancy dinner, a surprise birthday dinner at their favorite restaurant—perhaps with a small group of close friends and family—would really make their day.
Need help coming up with the best 60th birthday ideas for your parent, partner, or a friend? We reached out to a panel of contributors to curate a list of the most amazing 60th birthday ideas to mark the occasion.

To plan the perfect 60th birthday celebration, keep the birthday person, their personality, and their likes and interests at the center of all your planning. Follow these tips to plan a memorable and meaningful 60th birthday celebration.
- Consider their personality. What are the birthday person’s personality traits and preferences? Do they love being in a large crowd, or do they prefer more relaxed, intimate gatherings? Some may appreciate a quiet dinner with close family, while others might enjoy a larger, more festive event.
- Do you want a theme? A theme can make the event more fun and memorable. It could be based on their hobbies, favorite colors, a favorite era (like the ’60s or ’70s), or something they’ve always wanted to experience.
- Choose the right venue. The venue should fit in your budget while accommodating the number of guests. A simple party at home is a great option for a low-key celebration on a budget. If you’re inviting dozens of guests, consider renting a space if you have the budget, or reserve a free public area, such as a park.
- Plan the menu in advance. Are you having a potluck-style gathering or a fully catered event? It’s always a good idea to have finger foods available that your guests can enjoy while they socialize. Party platters from Edible Arrangements® are the perfect choice. We offer an extensive collection of platters filled with an assortment of decadent treats, from fresh fruit favorites to delectable chocolate dipped fruits and scrumptious desserts. If you’re feeding a large crowd, a dessert charcuterie board is the way to go, featuring an assortment of all our most delicious treats. Plus, many of our most popular party platters and dessert boards are available for one-hour delivery if you’re in a pinch.
- Display memories to celebrate the birthday person. Set up a display of photographs and mementos from their many achievements and memorable moments. It’s a touching tribute, and it also makes a great icebreaker among guests.
- Consider entertainment. If you’re having an intimate gathering of a few friends and close family members, you probably don’t need much in the way of entertainment. In fact, you could spend an afternoon or evening watching clips from home videos and keep everyone entertained from start to finish. If you’re throwing a larger celebration, consider a DJ, live music, or activities like a photo booth or games.
Making the birthday person feel loved and celebrated on their special day is the main focus and the top priority. Tailoring the celebration to their likes and personality will make it memorable and enjoyable for all.

Dustin Lemick
Dustin Lemick is the CEO of BriteCo Jewelry Insurance.
“Coming up with a 60th birthday event idea is challenging because it comes down to a person’s interests.
I think if they like reading, throw them a book party where all the gifts they receive are books. Alternatively, if they’re a connoisseur of wine, take them wine tasting.
My mom threw my dad a party that resembled one of his favorite childhood birthday parties that she had photographs of. There were dinosaur balloons, a dinosaur cake, and everything dinosaur because that’s what he liked as a kid.”
Ted Howard
Ted Howard is an interior designer, home organizing expert, and founder of EZCustomGifts.
“One delightful idea for a 60th birthday celebration is to host a Golden Garden Party.
Host it in a beautifully decorated outdoor space, complete with golden accents and fairy lights. Invite loved ones for a picnic-style meal, set up a Memory Lane with photos and memories, and enjoy live music or a gardening workshop.
Finish with a golden-themed cake and toasts to celebrate this special milestone. It’s a perfect blend of elegance and nostalgia.”
Joseph Gutheinz
Joseph Gutheinz is a Lawyer at Gutheinz Law Firm, LLP.
“My wife, Lori, and I are big on celebrating our birthdays at sea, on cruise ships.
For my 60th birthday we went on a cruise to Mexico. For my wife’s seventieth birthday, February 2024, we are taking an eight-day cruise to the Bahamas, and for our 50th wedding anniversary/my wife’s birthday in January 2026, we are thinking about taking a cruise around the world.
While cruising is awesome for people of all ages it is especially suitable for senior citizens, as there are several age specific activities on cruise ships that are tied to a slower pace. For me, you can park me at a blackjack table in a cruise ship casino, and I’m good for the duration.
My wife likes Bingo and we both like the onboard comedy acts and performances. We also enjoy the spas, fitness centers and pools. When we dock at foreign destinations we enjoy learning about the local cultures, swimming in the ocean, or taking a safari type excursion.”
Daniel Morris
Daniel Morris is the founder of My Caring Plan, a website dedicated to helping caregivers and seniors navigate the later stages of life.
“My favorite 60th birthday idea is The Legacy Project.
The idea is to help the birthday person embark on a meaningful endeavor that will have a long-lasting impact, reflecting their life’s journey, values, or aspirations. This gift is particularly thoughtful for milestone birthdays like the 60th, as it encourages introspection and offers an opportunity to make a lasting mark.
You can write a memoir. How? Gather special people, special memories, and special places for that person. Put it in a journal, video, or audio recording to help them create a narrative that encapsulates the celebrant’s life’s journey.
Capturing their life stories, lessons, and experiences benefits them by offering a form of reflection and serves as a treasure for future generations.”

“Go on a cruise. With retirement on the horizon, it’s time to tick things off your bucket list, and what better way to celebrate your 60th birthday than going on a cruise?
Not only will you have a blast, but you’ll also create memories with your loved ones that will last a lifetime. Indulge in a luxurious dinner or a cocktail party while enjoying the stunning views of the vast water and surrounding landscape.
Mark your 60th milestone with a Mediterranean cruise or a trip around the Caribbean. It’s your day, and the world is your oyster.”
Ruiz Asri
Ruiz Asri is the CKO & Editor of Honest Food Talks, a website dedicated to helping people discover new recipes, kitchen hacks, and the latest food trends.
“If life begins at 40, then the golden years start at 60.
There is no low-key celebration for this, so here are my recommendations for your diamond jubilee.
- Artisanal Cheese & Charcuterie Board – Cheese and charcuterie boards have been timeless, offering diverse textures and flavors that cater to different palates. An artisanal cheese and charcuterie board will serve as the start of the celebration. Incorporating a selection of fine cheeses, cured meats, fresh fruits, and assorted nuts creates a perfect balance of flavors catering to traditional and modern tastes.
- Live Pasta Station – A live pasta station can be a real crowd-pleaser, allowing guests to customize their dishes. They can choose from a selection of assorted fresh pasta, sauces, and toppings, offering an interactive and delightful dining experience. A live pasta station not only caters to different taste preferences but also adds a vibrant and entertaining element to the celebration.
- Exotic Fruit Buffet – Some steer away from the heavy meat as people age. An exotic fruit buffet can be the perfect choice for a 60th birthday celebration, especially during the summer. A beautifully arranged display of colorful, fresh, and exotic fruits can serve as a dessert alternative that caters to health-conscious guests. It’s a great way to offer guests a refreshing and naturally sweet option to indulge without guilt.”

“As I’m approaching that birthday, I’ve dropped some serious hints to my wife about what I’d love to do, which is to spend a day sampling and enjoying a tour of the vineyard at Camel Valley in Cornwall.
It’s a beautiful., peaceful vineyard and the wine they make is exquisite. I can think of more perfect way to celebrate sixty years on earth than by enjoying a glass or three of incredible crisp Chardonnay with the person I love most in the world.”
Rhys Charles
Rhys Charles is the CEO and Founder of Lawn and Tractors.
“My favorite 60th birthday idea is a tropical getaway. If you want to treat yourself to a relaxing and exotic vacation, a tropical getaway is a perfect choice.
You can escape the stress and routine of everyday life and immerse yourself in a paradise of sun, sand, and sea. You can also explore the culture, cuisine, and nature of your destination, or simply lounge by the pool or beach.
A tropical getaway is a wonderful way to celebrate your 60th birthday in style and luxury.”

“My favorite 60th birthday idea is a friends and family golf tournament. This is a fun and active way to spend your birthday with your loved ones.
You can enjoy the fresh air, the scenic views, and the friendly competition. You can also customize the tournament to suit your preferences, such as choosing the course, the format, and the prizes.
A golf tournament is a great way to bond with your guests and create lasting memories.”

“One idea is a ‘Decades Party,’ where each past decade of the celebrant’s life is revisited with thematic decorations, music, and attire.
It’s a nostalgic and interactive way to walk down memory lane.
Another idea is a ‘Memory Photo Party,’ where guests can share photos from different stages of the celebrant’s life. These can be compiled into a beautiful montage or digital photo album as a keepsake.
Lastly, a ‘Travel-themed Party’ can be centered around the birthday person’s favorite travel destination or a place they’ve always dreamed of visiting. This theme can be incorporated into the decor, food, music, and dress code, creating an unforgettable journey.”
Peter Michaels
Peter Michaels is the CEO of Yeespy, the leading parental monitoring solution. At Yeespy, they offer the only reliable option for keeping an eye on your children’s location and monitoring their communication across SMS and social apps.
“My favorite 60th birthday idea for a corporate celebration is a diamond-themed masquerade ball. It’s a sophisticated and grand way to commemorate this milestone birthday, and it’s perfect for both employees and clients.
Here’s how I would plan it:
- Venue: I would choose a venue that is both spacious and luxurious, such as a ballroom or hotel ballroom. I would decorate the space with diamond-themed elements, such as crystal chandeliers, silver tablecloths, and diamond-shaped confetti.
- Food and drink: I would serve a variety of delicious food and drinks, including champagne, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres. I would also have a dessert table with diamond-shaped cakes and pastries.
- Entertainment: I would hire a live band or DJ to play music for the evening. I would also have a photo booth where guests could take pictures with their friends and colleagues.
- Dress code: I would require guests to wear masks and black-tie attire. This would add to the mystery and excitement of the evening.”

“I have not reached the age of 60 but if I had to celebrate my 60th birthday then I would plan a family gathering and I would cook everything by myself.
I have always loved cooking and I would definitely invite all of my loved ones on my 60th birthday and would make their favorite dishes. We all would gather around and play some interesting games, talk our hearts out. It would make my special day more special.”
Rokas Mickevicius
Rokas is a founder of GiftingDeer.com. He spends a considerable amount of time every day researching gift ideas and creating guides that help people find the perfect present for their special someone.
“My top pick for a 60th birthday celebration combines nostalgia and fun through an outdoor movie night under the stars. This idea is all about creating a cozy, open-air cinema, perhaps in a backyard or a local park, showcasing favorite films or a surprise slideshow of precious memories and messages from loved ones.
This setup is simple yet impactful, requiring just a screen (or a white sheet) and a projector. The atmosphere is amplified with comfortable seating made from blankets and pillows, ensuring every guest can relax and enjoy the show.
Snacking on classics like popcorn and candies while watching the movies adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Infusing the event with a blast from the past through themed decorations and a retro dress code can make the evening even more delightful and engaging.
Creating a special corner for guests to leave birthday messages and share fond memories ensures the birthday person feels extraordinarily loved and cherished on their milestone celebration. The aim is to weave a night of comfort, fun, and poignant memories that the birthday person and guests will cherish forever.”

“Nothing fulfills your heart more than a memory of kindness. To make your 60th birthday most memorable and meaningful, making acts of kindness would be a great idea.
All it takes is a little effort and lots of positive energy. The process of ‘giving’ is not necessarily any expensive thing, but simple and cost-effective items.
If you can make someone happy on your birthday, they will be thankful for you on the day you are born. Remember, a little goes a long way.”

“My favorite 60th birthday idea would be a family vacation. Family will always come first, and I believe, no matter where you are or go, a special occasion is fully enjoyed if spent with the people you hold dearly at heart.
Consider taking the family to a place the birthday person has always wished to visit. At 60, the world is truly your oyster, and there’s nothing you can’t explore. This can be the best way to create beautiful memories and commemorate their birthday.”
Eric Jones

Spending the day performing 60 acts of kindness in my community or among friends and family would be a meaningful way to celebrate. It’s not only about marking the milestone but also about giving back, spreading positivity, and creating lasting memories through acts of generosity and kindness.”
Leif Holtzman

“The best 60th birthday ideas are those that incorporate your loved one’s passions and interests. This doesn’t mean you have to go all out with a big party—you can get creative and make it a day they’ll never forget!
For example, I was invited to an anniversary party by one of my friends who loves to cook. She made all of our favorite foods, and then we spent the afternoon reminiscing about our favorite meals together. It was so much fun!
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate your loved one’s birthday, try going for a walk through their favorite park or finding a new restaurant by them and going there together. You’ll have a great time and create memories that will last forever.”

“As an experienced physician, I am routinely reminded of the importance of cherishing milestone moments and promoting wellness in all aspects of life, including how we celebrate events like 60th birthdays. One of my favorite ideas is organizing a wellness retreat with loved ones. This could involve activities like:
- Yoga sessions
- Nutritious meals
- Meditation workshops
It encourages the celebrant to embark on a journey of overall well-being, balancing their emotional, physical, and spiritual health.
For a more personalized touch, creating a memory capsule with contributions from all friends and family can be deeply touching. Each person could share a cherished memory, life lesson, or heartwarming message for the celebrant. This serves as a poignant reminder of their life’s journey and their impact on their loved ones.
Finally, if the celebrant is philanthropically inclined, organizing a fundraiser or volunteering event in their honor would be an excellent way to pay tribute to their life thus far while also positively impacting their community or a cause they are passionate about.
These ideas all contribute to making a 60th birthday celebration not just a party but a meaningful reflection on the past and an inspiring outlook toward the future.”

“One of my favorite 60th birthday ideas is a 60 Years Young Parade. You organize a surprise parade where friends and family drive by the birthday person’s house with cars decorated with funny signs like Officially Vintage or Aged to Perfection. Bonus points for cars that blast music from the decade the birthday person was born.
Another favorite is a Bucket List Bash. You find out some items on their bucket list and try to tick off one or two for the birthday.
Alternatively, you create DIY versions of the list that can be done at a party. For example, skydiving becomes a friend trust fall and visiting Greece transforms into a giant Baklava.”
Bart Nanka
Bart is the manager at Mudbrick Herb Cottage, a five-star-rated herbal plant store and nursery.
“My favorite 60th birthday idea is to organize a family and friends reunion. There’s something truly special about bringing together the people who have been a significant part of the birthday person’s life.
It can be an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, depending on their preferences. You can plan it at a favorite restaurant, a cozy backyard barbecue, or even a weekend getaway to a place filled with cherished memories.
The focus is on togetherness and sharing stories, laughter, and love with the people who matter most. It’s a heartfelt way to mark this milestone and create beautiful memories.
I can also suggest some popular 60th birthday ideas that people may enjoy. Some ideas include:
- A surprise party with close friends and family
- A weekend getaway to a favorite destination
- A themed party, such as a decade party or a masquerade ball
- A dinner party at a favorite restaurant or at home with a private chef
- A spa day or weekend retreat
- A wine or whiskey tasting event
- A hot air balloon ride or other adventure activity
- A personalized photo album or video montage of memories”

Dustin Sitar

“For my dad’s 60th birthday, we had a nice dinner at a local restaurant and then went home and watched a highlight reel of major events in my dad’s life, like his high school football games. A cousin put the whole video together, and it was a lot of fun to watch and listen to my dad reminisce. Something sentimental like that is a great idea for a 60th birthday.”
Vitaliy Vinogradov
Vitaliy Vinogradov is an interior Designer and also project manager at Modern.place.
“My favorite 60th birthday idea involves hosting a Decades Party. This themed celebration takes the birthday honoree and guests on a thrilling journey through the past six decades. Each era can be represented by its distinctive music, fashion, and décor.
Start by transforming the venue into a time travel haven. Set up different areas representing each decade, complete with era-specific decorations, such as disco balls and psychedelic patterns for the 70s, neon lights and geometric shapes for the 80s, or vintage Hollywood glamour for the 50s.
Encourage guests to dress up in attire from their favorite decade, adding to the fun atmosphere. Hire a DJ or create playlists featuring iconic songs from each era, ensuring that everyone gets on their feet and dances to the beats of their favorite tunes.
Incorporate interactive elements like a photo booth with props and backgrounds representing different decades. Encourage guests to capture their best poses and later compile the photos in a memorable album as a keepsake for the birthday honoree.
As the highlight of the party, organize a nostalgic trivia game or a slideshow featuring memorable moments from the birthday star’s life. This will foster a sense of nostalgia and allow everyone to celebrate their remarkable journey through the years.
By creating a Decades Party, you provide a unique opportunity for the birthday honoree and guests to celebrate the past while embracing the present. It’s a joyous and memorable way to commemorate this milestone birthday in a fun and interactive way.”

Consider a trip to a destination that’s always held a special place in your heart or one that you’ve been eager to explore. Traveling not only allows you to discover new horizons but also presents an opportunity to connect with diverse cultures and create lasting memories.
Whether it’s a solo journey, or an adventure with loved ones, a trip across the country, or

“I firmly believe in crafting a 60th birthday celebration that pays tribute to a person’s life journey and accomplishments. One event that comes to mind is a Life’s Highlights dinner party I had the privilege of organizing for my dear friend, Mark. It was a beautiful gathering of friends and family, where the venue was adorned with photographs and cherished mementos representing key moments in Mark’s life.
During the dinner, we served Mark’s favorite dishes from various stages of his life, creating a culinary journey through time. Guests were encouraged to share brief anecdotes and raise toasts to treasured memories they had with Mark. This intimate setting allowed for
reflection, gratitude, and a truly personal celebration.
The Life’s Highlights dinner not only celebrated Mark’s life journey but also highlighted the profound impact he had on others. It was a profoundly meaningful and unforgettable 60th birthday celebration that underscored the significance of cherishing memories and relationships.”
Jeremy Scott Foster
Jeremy Scott Foster is the CEO of the online travel site, TravelFreak.
“Make no mistake, age is just a number. The age of 60 does not mean a person should keep their packed bags in the closet or under their bed. A wonderful gift idea for this age is none other than an opportunity to travel, and maybe see something new or even revisit an old favorite location to make new memories.
With 60 years of life comes wisdom and reflection. Unfortunately, it can also sometimes come with regret.
Why not gift your favorite 60-year-old with that bucket list trip they have always talked about?
With time to think about all the things they would love to see and experience, a trip to Paris or Italy or an Alaskan cruise will prove to any senior citizen their best days are ahead and not in their past.
Also, consider a gift that is a trip to a person’s favorite childhood vacation spot or where family memories were once made. A trip down memory lane can be just as valuable as a world wonder.
As with all my travel advice, I do remind trip planners to keep in mind physical capabilities and limitations so adventures are enjoyed, and not causes for (avoidable) frustration or injury.”
George Yang
George Yang is the the founder of Yanre fitness and OxygenArk.
“For my 60th birthday, I would spend it in a countryside location that holds a special place in my heart. I specifically chose an old cabin my family used to frequent when I was younger, located in a secluded area about two hours’ drive from my current residence.
We’d start the day with a family yoga session at 7:00 a.m., breathing in the crisp morning air. For breakfast, we’d enjoy a pre-prepared spread of whole-grain pancakes, fresh berries, and hot tea, set up on a rustic wooden table by the cabin’s porch.
In the late morning, we’d embark on a nature hike through the familiar woods, a trail that we’ve walked countless times but still offers new sights and sounds. The hike would be approximately four miles long and take us about two hours. We would pack a simple picnic of chicken sandwiches and apple slices, then eat it at a specific clearing that has a great view of the valley. We make sure to bring sandwiches made from grilled chicken breast and whole-grain bread, along with freshly-cut apple slices stored in a reusable container.
After getting back to the cabin, we’d each do our own thing for a while. Some of us might read books, others could paint, and a few might go fishing in the stream close by. When it’s time for dinner, we’d all help out in cooking. If someone caught fish earlier, we’d grill it for the meal. We make sure to use a charcoal grill for that authentic smoky flavor and pair
the fish with locally-sourced vegetables.
To relax at the end of the day, we’d sit around a bonfire we build using logs and kindling from the surrounding area. We’d have a time for sharing memories or lessons. Each of us, even my grandchildren, would talk about a special moment or something new they learned. We make it a point to sit on comfortable yet durable outdoor chairs, making sure everyone has a cozy blanket to ward off the evening chill.”
Olivia John
Olivia John is a mommy, travel & lifestyle blogger with her own personal blog, My Sparkling Life.
“60th birthdays can be a huge milestone for anyone. There’s no better way to celebrate entering your 60s than by looking back at your childhood.
Celebrate the life that you have lived by getting out photo albums. Better yet, make a slideshow that showcases your best moments.
Eat your favorite childhood foods and play the board games you love. If you have ever thought that you’re getting too old to do something, this is the day to do it.
Get together with your friends and family, and make a memorable day out of all your favorite memories.”
James Owen
James Owen is the Co-founder and Director of Click Intelligence, a great online sales solution for retailers and agencies.
“A memorable 60th birthday idea is to host a Decades themed party. It celebrates both the milestone age and the six decades of life. Encourage guests to dress up in attire representing different decades, from the 1960s to the 2020s.
The color theme for the party can be black, white, and silver to symbolize timeless elegance. Decorate the venue with photos and memorabilia from each decade.
It will showcase the birthday person’s life journey. Incorporate diamond-themed decor, like sparkling centerpieces and table settings.
Create a playlist featuring hit songs from the ’60s to the present. Play music from each era to get everyone on the dance floor and evoke nostalgia. It’s a fun and meaningful way to mark your 60th birthday.”
Shelley Grieshop
Shelley Grieshop is a blog writer for Totally Promotional where she gives expert advice on event planning, branding and many other topics.
“I’m a 60-something, and my favorite 60th birthday idea would be a surprise adult field trip or experience with a group of friends or relatives.
No one at this age needs more stuff. The ideal scenario would be having two or three people in the group plan a cruise or a trip that doesn’t require anyone to drive long distances. Think flights!
Have shirts printed up for everyone to wear at key times during the trip. They should be printed with a fun name for the group or a great quote that hits home with everybody.
Letting the birthday boy or girl know about the plans just a day or two in advance makes for priceless video!”
Jonathan Rodgers
Jonathan Rodgers is the CFA at BestDaily.
“A good 60th birthday idea is to do a volunteer program to a cause close to your heart.
Instead of setting up a birthday party and spending tons of money, you can go out of your way and do a feeding program to those who need it. You can do a volunteer program to a nearby senior citizen home and order food packs for the people there.
This will not only make them very happy but will also make you feel good. If you don’t want a feeding program, you can also buy books and donate them to the nearest community library.”
