Limes provide a zesty taste on a hot summer’s day, a delightfully sour pop of flavor to a dish, or a tangy garnish to your favorite drinks. There are a variety of types of limes, but the most common limes are Persian limes. These are the limes that you typically think of when you think of limes. Another popular type of lime is the key lime, also known as Mexican or West Indian limes. Key limes are smaller, tarter, and more aromatic. These are often used to make delicious desserts, such as key lime pie.

Not only are limes completely delicious, but they also provide powerful health benefits. Limes contain antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and have even been shown to help prevent certain chronic illnesses. They also contain high levels of vitamin C, which can help protect you from infection and boost your body’s immune system.

Limes are relatively easy to cut. You can quickly turn them into wedges or wheels for various uses. Or, you can cut them in half and squeeze the juice out to add to your favorite meals. Here’s more on how to cut limes:

How to Tell if a Lime is Ripe

Lime

You might be surprised to learn that limes will turn yellow if left to ripen on the vine. Yellow limes are far less acidic than green limes. Since they’ve had more time to mature on the vine, they’re much sweeter and juicier. However, limes are coveted due to their sour flavor that makes you pucker up. That’s why they’re harvested early before they reach full ripeness. Therefore, when selecting limes at the store, look for green limes that have that distinct lime scent.

2 Easy Ways to Cut a Lime

Lime

You can cut limes in various ways, but the most popular are wedges or wheels. Here’s how to cut limes in these two ways:

1. Cut into Wedges

Lime

This is perhaps the most popular way to cut a lime. You can use lime wedges to garnish drinks or your favorite meals. To start, wash the fruit to remove any dirt and debris. Then, using a shape paring knife, cut the ends of the lime off the fruit. Don’t cut too deeply into the fruit. Instead, you just want to remove the excess.

Next, stand the fruit on its end and cut the lime in half lengthwise. From here, you can slice each half into two to three wedges, depending on the size of the fruit. For a smaller lime, you can cut each half in half again lengthwise to create four wedges. For a larger lime, cut each half into three pieces for six wedges.

Keep in mind that the wedge needs to be large enough to squeeze to remove the juice. You don’t want to make it too small that you can’t squeeze any juice out. To use as a garnish, you can make a slice into the wedge so that it can sit on the edge of the glass evenly.

2. Cut into Wheels

Limes

Start by cutting the lime in half widthwise. Take one of the halves and make another cut 1/4 inch back. This produces a wheel with the perfect thickness.

Continue cutting even 1/4 inch to create a pile of wheels. You can throw away the end pieces. To use as a garnish, you can make a slit from the center of the wheel all the way through the peel. Then, you can set the wheel onto the glass with the slit on either side of the rim.

How to Store a Lime After It is Cut

Lime

You can store freshly cut limes in airtight containers or storage bags in the refrigerator for three to four days. They will eventually dry out from sitting in the fridge for too long, so it’s best to enjoy them quickly. Limes don’t freeze as well as other fruits because freezing and defrosting can make them soft and mushy. However, you can still use defrosted limes for testing and juicing.

Now that you know how to cut limes, you can use the for a variety of purposes. Use a lime wedge as a garnish for a drink or a dish, or squeeze a wedge atop your tacos to add a bit of tangy lime flavor. There’s no end to the ways you can use this zesty, sour, and delicious fruit.
