A pinata serves double duty at your party. It not only looks great but also provides entertainment for the kids. Fill it with candy, give the little ones a baseball bat, and they’ll know just what to do. There’s no need to go out and buy a pinata for your next party. With a few simple supplies, you can make your own.
Instead of relying on the limited options at the party store, creating your own pinata gives you the flexibility to create something that will truly delight your little one, no matter what she’s into. You can create the shape of a unicorn, a donut, her favorite Disney character, or even just the age she’s celebrating. No matter her choice, making your own pinata can turn into a fun family experience that’s every bit as fun as breaking one. Here’s how to do it.
If you’re hosting a kid’s party, consider serving our Rainbow And Butterflies Bouquet to your guests. It’s packed with chocolate-covered strawberries topped with brightly-colored chocolate drizzle, pineapple daisies, pineapple butterflies, pineapple hearts, fresh honeydew, and delicious cantaloupe. It’s the perfect addition to your dessert table.
Supplies You’ll Need to Make Your Own Pinata
There are several different methods for making your own pinata, but we think the easiest method involves using cardboard to create the shape of your pinata. This way, you can create the exact shape you’re looking for, whether that’s a donut or a cartoon superhero dog. Here are the supplies you’ll need:
- Cardboard: Gather two pieces of sturdy cardboard that are large enough for the desired shape of your pinata.
- Empty cereal box or extra cardboard: This lighter-weight cardboard helps you create sides and the flap for filling.
- Tissue paper: Choose the colors you’ll need to create your design.
- Masking tape: Masking or duct tape will hold your design together.
- Scissors: Craft scissors will help you make fringe from your tissue paper.
- Glue: Choose a glue stick or regular school glue to attach the tissue paper.
- Twine: You’ll use this to hang your creation.
How to Make a Pinata
Now that you’ve gathered up all the necessary supplies, you’re ready to get started. Here’s how to make your pinata step by step:
Step 1: Cut Out Your Pinata
Begin this project by cutting your desired shape or number out of your large piece of cardboard. You’ll need two identical pieces of the same shape. Choose the dimensions that you prefer. It can be as big or as small as you’d like.
Step 2: Create the Sides of the Pinata
Cut strips out of the cereal box or lighter-weight cardboard. These strips will create the sides of your pinata. How wide you cut these strips will determine how thick the pinata will be. A larger pinata can be made a bit wider, and a smaller pinata should be a bit more narrow.
Step 3: Assemble the Pinata
Use the masking tape to attach the cardboard shapes to the lighter-weight strips. Match the edges at a 90-degree angle to keep everything level. Don’t be afraid to use plenty of masking tape. This will help reinforce the pinata so it can hold plenty of candy. Be sure to leave a flap open at the top so you’re able to fill it.
Step 5: Cover Your Pinata with Tissue Paper
Next, create the tissue paper that will cover your pinata. Cut two-inch-wide strips of tissue paper. Then, create the fringe by cutting halfway up one side of the tissue paper. Repeat to create enough tissue paper fringe to cover the entire pinata. Next, you’ll need to glue the fringe onto the pinata. Make sure you start at the bottom and work your way up, overlapping each piece of tissue paper so only the fringe is showing. You can use construction paper to create some of the smaller details, such as eyes, ears, and even unicorn horns.
Step 6: Fill Your Pinata with Candy and Hang It
When you’re finished decorating your pinata, you can fill it with candy. Then, create a hole in the flap at the top. String your twine through the hole and then tape down the flap to seal. You can hang your pinata from a tree branch for outdoor events or a hook on the ceiling for indoor parties.
You’ll find that making your own pinata is an absolute blast. You also don’t need to make sure it’s perfect. After all, it’s meant to be broken. Choose our Simply Edible™ Bouquet Edible® Donut to delight your guests once the fun with the pinata is over.
