More Info About Admin Professionals Day
The origins of Admin Professionals Day start in 1952. In June of that year, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Charles Sawyer proclaimed National Secretaries Week with June 4 designated as National Secretaries Day. Over time, the nomenclature switched from focusing on secretaries to admin professionals. Now, Admin Professionals Day is observed on the last Wednesday (during the last full week) of April every year.
Although Admin Professionals Day is an unofficial national holiday, office staff look forward to the week and day. Now, many companies observe Administrative Professionals Week as a way to recognize the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists and other administrative support professionals.
The best places to work routinely celebrate and acknowledge all of their employees. However, everyone likes to receive a little extra acknowledgement from time to time. And Admin Professionals Day acts as a way to show that appreciation. For more, the following reasons really stress why Administrative Professionals Week makes a difference to employee morale!
Employee recognition goes a LONG way.
According to a Inc. and a recent survey from Ladders of 16,500 of its job-switching members, the researchers got a surprise. People do not quit their jobs because of money. Rather, good employees leave good jobs due to lack of recognition. In particular, employees want to remain engaged and understood. As a result, frequently, good employees note boredom (lack of engagement) and hours (lack of understanding their work/life needs). As the Inc. report shares:
“Instead, in almost every field, the two reasons most often cited for flying the coop were boredom and long hours—especially, the study notes, in finance, engineering, project management, and IT…”Nobody wakes up one morning all of a sudden bored with their job, or feeling exhausted by endless hours,” says Stacey Engle, an executive vice president at leadership-development consultants Fierce. Rather, what she often sees in companies is that people quit “gradually, then suddenly. Someone’s frustration with their position builds up and builds up over time, until they’ve just had it.”
Administrative Professionals’ Week is the PERFECT opportunity to recognize your team for going above and beyond, day in and day out.
Your administrative team holds your office together!
Think about it…what would happen to your office without them?! They are truly the masters of it all – multitasking, organization, communication skills, handling stress… the list goes on. So, take the word of Robert Half and share your appreciation.
“A simple thank-you can go a long way. But don’t only say it and leave it at that. Let your admins know how their work has helped you or the department. Share praise from happy clients, celebrate achievements and recognize your staff publicly — in front of peers. An even nicer touch is a verbal commendation followed by a handwritten note. Administrative professionals can display such a card or note on their desk, reminding them of how much they are appreciated.”
Take this week to REALLY recognize EVERYTHING they do to keep things running smoothly.
Administrative staff are a BIG part of your team and work family.
They’re here for you through it all, so it’s important to make sure they know how much you appreciate it! Things wouldn’t be the same without them in the office, and this week is ALL about letting them know that. For example, at Edible®, our Chief People Officer, Ed Welsh shares some thoughts on leadership and showing how to engage your team.
“Take the time to understand what’s important to your team. I find this very important and beneficial, no matter your role. Ask yourself these questions: What drives them? What inspires them? What do they want to do? If you don’t have answers, interact with your team to find out! Engage them, develop them, and get them involved. This will not only contribute to your team’s growth, but your own as well!”
After all, everyone deserves to have some time in the spotlight!
