Pick Game Day – First things first–plan ahead! Whether you’re a seasoned tailgater or a rookie, you need to pick the game you want to make the centerpiece of your event. Maybe you’re a die-hard who attends every weekend, or you prefer to focus on the big rivalry showdown. Or maybe it’s a spur of the moment decision. But you want to leave enough time for family and friends to plan on gathering in the stadium parking lot for a fun feast. Check out the game schedule once it is announced and ask your tailgate buddies to mark their calendars for a winning event!
Location, location, location- In case you missed that—it’s all about the location! If your family has been tailgating in one particular spot for years, you know to keep it, you’ve got to get to the parking lot early! This is not the day to be running late… or you could risk not getting that prime real estate that everyone wants. Once you’ve found the perfect place to park it, start setting up your party space. It might be a good idea to set out some bright orange traffic cones around you so that no one else bumps into you (or your grill).
Don’t Forget the Soundtrack- The first TD to a great tailgate starts with a rocking soundtrack! A great playlist is like the rookie that some people forget about until their franchise QB has a season ending injury… Don’t be the person who forgets the playlist! We suggest starting the music on your ride to the stadium and keep it going so you get to have some fun while setting up the party.
Show Your Team Some Love- Tailgating is not for the faint of heart… Whether you’re a die-hard fan or you love to have a good time before the big game, you need to show your team some love! You and the rest of the partygoers should all be wearing team colors, or some serious body paint. Tailgaters know it’s all about the colors and the decorations, so if you’re a UConn fan, bring that UConn blanket. Texas Longhorn alum? Break out that Hook’em street sign! Whatever team you love, just make sure when the other teams’ tailgaters see you, they know who you’re rooting for—and who’s team is going to win.
Keep It Fun- It’s always a good idea to remember some games and activities for game day! Since tailgating is an all-day affair, it’s important to think about how to keep everyone entertained before you go in for the game…and let’s be honest, you can only eat so much before you zonk out into a food coma. A game of Can Jam, Corn Hole, or just throwing around a football can help keep you active for the game. And who knows? Maybe someone important will notice your mad 2 hand touch skills or touchdown dance.
Keep the Food Classic & Portable- Every tailgate needs an awesome spread of food, so why not stick to the classics? Tailgates call for grilled food, delicious sides, and even colder drinks! Grill up some killer cheeseburgers, break out the classic Frito Pie, and keep the dip and chips coming. Just remember that people are going to be moving, eating, playing, or standing around so keep the food portable. Serve everything already in or on plastic or paper plates, bowls, cups, etc. Plus that will make clean up a breeze. Remember everyone LOVES a tailgate, so don’t forget to have enough for your entire crowd! And last but NOT least…
