Hat’s Off to Texas

0

As they say, everything is bigger in Texas, and now Edible Arrangements is getting bigger in the Lone Star state as well with 2 new stores opening soon. And the enterprise of one of our most talented franchisees, Reva Gartzke, is also getting bigger as she has signed an agreement to open another Edible Arrangements store in the Cedar Park, TX region. This will be Reva’s fourth store in Texas. Her other three stores are located in Austin and Round Rock, Texas. Reva has been an Edible Arrangements franchise owner since 2006, and a mentor for many franchisees and role model for the brand. Not only is she passionate about her business and taking care of her customers, but her passion, and compassion, extends to the many charitable causes she participates in, none more so than her leadership role as a mentor and volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Reva is a big part of our system, and we are proud of her and her accomplishments.

In addition, I’m happy to welcome a new franchise owner to the Edible Arrangements system. Carlman Daniel and his family are making the big move to Texas as he will be opening an Edible Arrangements store in Conroe, and a second location in Texas shortly thereafter. Carlman and his family embody the community spirit that is prevalent in so many of our franchisees. Carl and his wife were actively involved in their community in New York, and opened and managed several preschool and nursery schools, as well as a beauty supply store. I’m certain the great people of Texas will welcome the Daniel family as they start building a new life in Texas, and getting heavily involved in community activities.

Now after treatments her cancer is in full remission and Claudia is taking advantage of this second chance at life by taking charge of their second Edible Arrangements store in Laredo. Her favorite Edible Arrangements product is the box of Chocolate Dipped Strawberries with Mixed Toppings.

Edible Arrangements Signs Master Franchisee Agreements in Rome & Hong Kong

Pioneer in Fresh-Fruit Arrangements Expands International Presence to Eight Countries

WALLINGFORD, Conn., July 13 Edible Arrangements, the pioneer and leader in hand-sculpted, fresh fruit arrangements, announced today the signing of two Master Franchisee agreements in Rome, Italy and Hong Kong. With these recent agreements, Edible Arrangements is now available to consumers in eight countries outside of the United States and Puerto Rico.

VPF International Ltd. will operate as the Rome Master Franchisee and plans to develop a total of five locations in Rome with at least one planned to open later this year. VPF is led by Fausto Petruzziello, M.D., who was born and raised in Rome and currently resides in Connecticut. Petruzziello has built a team of professionals both in the U.S. and Italy to ensure Edible Arrangements can succeed abroad.

The Hong Kong Master Franchisee is D.T. Hong Kong Ltd. and will be led by Sanja Dujic, who currently resides in Hong Kong. Dujic plans to develop six stores in the city with the first location to open in the fourth quarter.

“We are excited to introduce Edible Arrangements to consumers in Rome and Hong Kong and welcome Sanja and Fausto into our system,” said Tariq Farid, CEO and Founder, Edible Arrangements, Inc. “We see great promise in these cities and know our new master franchisees will be great ambassadors for the brand.”

Currently, Edible Arrangements has 900 locations with the goal to reach 1,000 units by 2010. These recent signings are part of an aggressive growth strategy that includes expanding in existing markets and countries while continuing Edible Arrangements domestic growth in California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Philadelphia and New York. In addition to finding qualified new franchisees, the company’s growth strategy includes growing its existing franchise base into enterprise multi-unit operators.

“Since receiving my first Edible Arrangements basket 10 years ago, I’ve been enamored with such an original idea and been a frequent customer,” said Petruzziello. “Since leaving Rome in 1995, I’ve always wanted to launch a new, ground-breaking business in my native country and after speaking with the Farid brothers, I knew the Italian culture would respond positively to this unique business. We’re very excited to introduce Italians to Edible Arrangements.”

Recently the recipient of two Entrepreneur of the Year awards, International Franchise Association and Ernst & Yong in Metro New York, Farid developed and launched Edible Arrangements in 1999 in East Haven, CT, after many years in the floral industry. He learned early that corporate support can make the difference between a struggling or thriving franchise. It is for this reason that Edible Arrangements offers its franchisees comprehensive corporate and onsite level training, unparalleled technology, national brand recognition and extensive support.

The company’s proprietary technology platform and point-of-sale system is the critical backbone of each Edible Arrangements’ store, where franchisees have 24/7 access to its industry leading on-line support system. Technology also assists in the development of the proprietary tools used to design arrangements, which enhances the product’s look and increases profit margins. The company has developed a fully integrated national marketing program focusing on television, magazine and online advertising.

“After hearing about Edible Arrangements from friends in the U.S., I knew immediately Hong Kongers would love the concept since we have tradition here of appreciating fine food and gifts,” said Dujic. “My business background in trade exporting and importing and production has prepared me well to succeed in introducing such a terrific product here in Hong Kong.”

Since its inception, Edible Arrangements has earned countless accolades from the industry, including its ranking as first in its category by Entrepreneur Magazine’s Annual “Franchise 500” Ranking in 2007, 2008, 2009, as well as one of the magazine’s “HOT 100” franchises in 2008. In addition, the company has ranked for three consecutive years in Inc. Magazine’s top 5,000 fastest growing privately-held companies and AllBusiness.com ranked Edible Arrangements as 23(rd) in overall growth and 65(th) in system size due to a doubling of units since 2006.

Individuals seeking to own and operate an individual Edible Arrangements’ franchise should possess a minimum liquidity of $50,000 and the ability to invest approximately $154,920 – $298,005. Multi-unit store networks and international master franchisee licenses are also available for qualified applicants. Financing options are available to qualified applicants. Edible Arrangements Launches First National Television Campaign Targeting Men

Fresh Fruit Retail Leader Launches 2010 National Advertising Campaign With Exclusive on ESPN

WALLINGFORD, CT–(Marketwire – 01/27/10) – Edible Arrangements, the pioneer and leader in hand-sculpted, fresh-fruit arrangements, announced today the launch of its 2010 national advertising campaign on January 27, 2010 on ESPN and ESPN2. The campaign marks the first time Edible Arrangements has targeted men with its national television advertising. The integrated marketing effort will also include national print, online and radio advertising promoting its products for Valentine’s Day.

The campaign entitled “Upstaged” features a man getting ready for his girlfriend to arrive for a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day. A red, heart-shaped box of chocolate sits on the coffee table, with a smooth-talking voice emanating from the box declaring that it’s “showtime.” When the girlfriend enters she spots her gift on the table and breaks into a huge smile. Then the camera pans to reveal the object of her excitement — an Edible Arrangements’ Berry Chocolate Bouquet. The dejected heart-shaped box of chocolate realizes he has competition from a new “ultimate wingman” — Edible Arrangements.

By using humor and storytelling in its new campaign, the program adds depth to Edible Arrangements’ previous television spots that focused primarily on educating consumers on its brand and products. Since its original campaign aired in 2008, Edible Arrangements has seen its advertising and brand awareness triple among consumers.

“The ‘Upstaged’ campaign supports Edible Arrangements’ focus on customer acquisition in 2010 by targeting simple gift choices consumers make during key holidays like Valentine’s Day,” said Stephen Thomas, Vice President of Marketing for Edible Arrangements. “Our campaign execution is respectfully comparative, while communicating Edible Arrangements as a fresher, more unique gift option for consumers.”

The “Upstaged” TV ads will debut on ESPN and ESPN2 during NCAA and NBA basketball programming, as well as during the NFL Pro Bowl and pre- and post-Super Bowl coverage during SportsCenter. Additional advertising will run on espn.com, ESPN Radio, Westwood One and in ESPN The Magazine. MediaCom, the brand’s media buying agency, chose ESPN since the network can effectively reach its new strategic target audience through multiple mediums, representing an ideal environment to deliver the brand’s message in TV, radio, online and print.

“Upstaged” will be followed by a second national TV, print and online campaign launching in late February called “Pass It On.” These branding spots illustrate how an Edible Arrangements’ bouquet can create transferrable happiness by showing people celebrating special moments in their lives with its fresh-fruit arrangements. The product is passed from one occasion to the next as people find new reasons to share happiness with their loved ones through a bouquet. The campaign will feature various non-major holiday occasions such as birthdays, get well or anniversaries and the tag line — Happiness is always in season. This campaign will air on national TV, print and online.

“The ‘Pass It On’ initiative addresses Edible Arrangements’ effort to build greater frequency among our current customer base,” said Thomas. “By showcasing how Edible Arrangements can be shared during special occasions and not just holidays, we’re confident consumers will begin to think of our fresh-fruit arrangements more often in 2010.”

The advertising campaign was created by Hot Dish Advertising. The television spots were directed by Kenny Morrison.

Edible Arrangements® 2012 Annual Convention

0

Well, I’m on my way to the 7th Annual Edible Arrangements Convention in Orlando, Florida. This is my favorite event of the year as it is the one time a majority of our franchisees get together to plan for the future and learn new ideas for Wowing our millions of guests around the world. And for me, I simply enjoy seeing and spending time with our franchisees, including our international master franchisees from China, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Italy and other countries, as their passion and excitement re-energizes me year after year.

As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, I believe it is critical for any organization to hold an annual gathering where all its employees, vendors, franchisees (if you are a franchisor like Edible Arrangements) or anyone connected with your business or cause can meet face-to-face in one place. Sure, some may argue that with the technology today including videoconferencing that the need for in-person gatherings has been diminished. However, I have to disagree. I believe that to really connect, or reconnect, with someone you need to look that person in the eye to truly feel engaged. It’s just more personable. Also, you can learn so much more by listening to and bouncing ideas off of a wider variety of people that only an in-person group setting can provide. Don’t get me wrong, videoconferencing has its place and is very useful in day-to-day long distance interactions, but nothing beats the ability to be able to shake someone’s hand, give them a pat on the back and to simply spend some quality time together.

However, it does take a lot of hard work to hold a successful convention or large scale gathering, but it is well worth it. I have to thank our amazing Edible Arrangements staff and franchisees for their dedication in making each convention better than the last, and for spending the time to decide on a meaningful theme for which all of us can rally around and work towards. The theme for our convention this year is ‘Be Our Guest’ because at Edible Arrangements we are committed to treating our customers (our guests), employees, and vendors as you would treat a guest in your home. All businesses need to take a step back to objectively analyze the service it provides, and take a long look into their DNA and culture to figure out what it is and does that is special. Our convention forces all of us, employees and franchisees, to really look into what Edible Arrangements stands for and strives to be. It also enables us to make sure we are doing all we can to Wow our guests every single time and truly welcome them into the wonderful world of Edible Arrangements.

Next week after I return I’ll let you know some of the new initiatives we discussed at the convention, and let you know if we were truly successful in making our franchisees and vendors feel like guests in our homes.

Edible Arrangements in Good Hands in Saudi Arabia

0

Edible Arrangements International is just that—an international company. Over the past several years, I’ve taken pride in watching the robust growth the franchise has enjoyed, not just here in the United States, but all over the world as well. One of the top nations in which this growth has occurred is Saudi Arabia. In July 2008, we signed a master franchise agreement with Nourah Al Rossais to develop stores there, and now she has just signed a subfranchise agreement for the eighth Saudi Arabian Edible Arrangements location, scheduled to officially open next month.

The store will be owned and operated by Satam Al-Amar, an experienced Fruit Expert with a store in Al-Khobar already under his belt. It’s our first store in Al Dammam, the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Added to current Edible Arrangements locations in Riyadh and Jeddah, this means that Edible Arrangements is now represented in the top three largest cities in the country.

I wish Satam and Nourah continued success in their efforts to strengthen the Edible Arrangements brand in Saudi Arabia. Nourah in particular is a fine example of what a master franchisee can accomplish, and the growth of our franchise in her home country sets an example from which anyone trying to expand a system overseas can learn.

Orange Blossoms for a Cause

0

People often ask me what it’s like to be in the happiness business, and it’s a question I never get tired of answering. Edible Arrangements franchisees get the same question, and I know they have the same reaction. Each and every day, these independent business owners bring happiness to a recent graduate, the birthday girl or boy, or someone recovering from an illness, to name just a few reasons and occasions to send a loved one an Edible Arrangements product. Their beautiful hand-made-to order fruit bouquets bring joy to others, but that’s not the only way many of our great franchisees make a difference in their communities.

This March Edible Arrangements franchisees throughout Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire are holding fundraising promotions in each of their stores to support Multiple Sclerosis research and services. This effort coincides with the National MS Society’s “MS Awareness Month.” All month long participating stores will make a $5 donation for every Orange Blossom® arrangement purchased to the Greater New England Chapter of the National MS Society. The stores chose the Orange Blossom because it’s delicious and popular with consumers, but also because orange is the official color of the National MS Society. Last fall, thanks to their generosity and their caring customers, this group ran this same promotion and raised over $5,000 for the cause.

Over the years I have found that a common characteristic of the people who are attracted to owning an Edible Arrangements franchise is a strong commitment to the communities they serve. Their stores are in the heart of busy downtowns, popular shopping districts and suburban malls where customers can easily stop in for fresh fruit products and an amazing shopping experience, and also get to know these local small business owners. Our franchisees are active members of civic organizations who pride themselves on giving back to their communities through fundraising efforts like the Boston –Manchester co-op has undertaken, or donating arrangements to charitable events or excess fruit to soup kitchens. One reason our franchisees make these contributions is because fresh fruit is such a welcome gift, but the compelling reason is that our franchisees understand what it means to be in the happiness business, and they love what they do. They just can’t help but bring joy to others with their products, service, and generosity. I am privileged to work with such compassionate and enthusiastic store owners!

Love, Marriage and Edible Arrangements

0

I always find it especially gratifying to see husbands and wives working together to start their own franchise business. In the case of Michael T., who just took over operations of the Whitby, Ontario Edible Arrangements location at the end of last month, the decision to go ahead with the venture was cemented by the approval of his closest confidante and business partner: his wife, Tracey.

While attending Edible Arrangements University (EAU) in our Wallingford, CT headquarters today, Michael had a chance to relate that in person:

“When we looked into this franchise, my wife really was impressed. She thought it was amazing, and so unique. She said we should go for this one. She was really happy, and we looked over everything carefully and both said, ‘We should do this.’”

A traveling computer consultant for many years, Michael welcomes the opportunity to be close to home instead of constantly on the road. He is also looking forward to the chance to share work responsibilities with his wife Tracey for the very first time:

“We were looking for something that both of us could do. My wife is partially disabled, and she wanted something she could help out with as well. This was a great opportunity for her, because she can work a few hours in the store doing day-to-day bookkeeping, and I can concentrate on running and marketing the store.”

And although they just joined the Edible Arrangements family, that hasn’t prevented Michael and Tracey from already dreaming up expansion plans. They hope to be able to grow the business and add a few more locations as soon as they can, and are excited to take on the new and convenient Edible to Go product line in the process.

I wish Michael and Tracey great success in their husband-wife venture, and trust they will find it to be a most rewarding experience.

McAllen Chamber of Commerce Recognizes Edible Arrangements® Franchisee Maurice Welton with 2012 Top 5 Small Business Award

0

The hard work and dedication demonstrated during this past year has once again earned Maurice Welton, owner of four Edible Arrangements® stores in Texas (McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville and Weslaco), well-deserved recognition from his local community. Coming off the heels of accepting the President’s Award at the 7th Annual Edible Arrangements Convention in August, Maurice was acknowledged on November 19th with a Top 5 Small Business Award from the City of McAllen Chamber of Commerce.

“I truly feel that this is like the Hall of Fame of businesses, of earning something, in the city of McAllen,” said Maurice. “I can’t say thank you enough, not only to (the city of) McAllen, but to the people of McAllen, the Rio Grande Valley, everybody and anybody who has been touched or been given an arrangement throughout the five years. I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Representing one of the fastest growing regions in the country, the McAllen Chamber says their Top 5 Small Business Award not only assesses the success of one business within a calendar year, but is truly “held in honor of those businesses, which have been the foundation for the economic growth, which McAllen has experienced over the last several years”.

My Store Marketing; New Year, New Toolkits

0

A new year is on the horizon for Edible Arrangements and its local store marketing tactics.  The marketing team here has developed a new, well organized set of marketing tools for our franchisees in 2013. Moving into the New Year, we are demonstrating that making slight adjustments in marketing tactics, not complete strategy overhauls, can make some of the greatest impacts to a store’s bottom line.

To kick off these changes, we’ve introduced new and improved My Store Marketing Toolkits, aimed at simplifying the local store marketing process and offering store owners easy-to-use guides for implementation. Our goal with these new Toolkits is to not only provide franchisees with the necessary ingredients for success, but also give clear guidance on how to properly implement each individual marketing campaign. Within those guidelines, franchisees can now engage in their unique local markets more effectively than ever before.

An essential component to this layered approach is the support our field business leaders provide to franchisees and their store(s). Proper in-store utilization of the Toolkits is one of the main ways the field business leaders will assist franchisees, as they advise which set of banner advertisements are the most applicable and useful during certain times throughout the year. Whether they provide advice on specific Toolkits, or simply espouse general recommendations, the overall purpose is to increase local awareness for the individual stores and the respective owners, as well as the Edible Arrangements brand as a whole.

With the creation of these new Toolkits and processes, we hope to WOW our franchisees just as much as they WOW our customers!

Edible Arrangements® Hosts 2013 Grower/Distributor Conference

On Wednesday, January 16th, we welcomed Edible Arrangements® produce vendors at our 2013 Grower/Distributor Conference, held in North Haven, Conn. This collaborative day of presentation and in-depth discussion brought together our corporate team members and franchisees with vendors from the Edible Arrangements® FRESH program to address all things fruit-related, and to elaborate on our mutual goals.

Well-Deserved Recognition for an Exemplary Franchisee

0

At last year’s Edible Arrangements convention, it was my pleasure to bestow the President’s Award—the highest honor an EA franchisee can achieve—to Maurice Welton, a Texas-based owner in our system who has quite literally set the bar as far as positive attitude, enthusiastic determination and work ethic. I’ve been watching Maurice’s progress and growth for years, which is why it was so gratifying to see him recently featured in the March 2013 edition of Black Enterprise magazine.

With his unflagging passion for his business—the business of delivering certified happiness to his many loyal customers—it’s no wonder that Maurice is also a veteran. His can-do spirit and untiring passion has enabled him to expand his Edible Arrangements enterprise from his original McAllen, Texas store to three stores, with plans to expand to a fourth location soon.

It all started due to Maurice’s desire to be his own boss. Interestingly, it was an appearance by my brother Kamran and me on CNBC’s The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch that originally convinced Maurice that EA was the answer he was looking for. I believe it was our passion that connected with Maurice—it was something he also felt within himself. He challenged himself to match our enthusiasm. After researching our company, he decided it was the right fit for him, and started putting together his strategy for success.

Like the most successful of our franchisees, Maurice walked in the door with a plan. He hit the ground running. Every dime he got out of EA, he reinvested in EA. It’s that kind of approach that helped make him into one of the shining stars of the Edible Arrangements franchise system. It’s no surprise to me that he was profiled in Black Enterprise, but it does make me proud. I’d like to take this opportunity to send my warmest congratulations, and wish him continued success in the years to come!

Groundbreaking New Advertising Campaign Launching April 28

0

Edible Arrangements is launching a visually stunning nationwide new advertising campaign this Saturday with a new Mother’s Day television commercial featuring the ‘magical’ world of Edible Arrangements.  We have teamed with internationally recognized foodscape artist Carl Warner to create a world where fruit and art collide; where mom’s mailbox is mango and her cozy home sits nestled next to a grove of pineapple hearts as an orange butterfly floats by.

The new campaign breaks away from the product focused commercials and print materials we have been using, to a campaign that represents and defines our brand personality. Edible Arrangements creates magical moments for its customers, and the new advertising campaign takes you through this magical world from the beginning to the end where one of our franchisees plucks a pineapple daisy from the fictional world we created to complete an arrangement for a customer. We also introduce our first custom jingle –“Make Life a Little Sweeter with Edible Arrangements.”

We hope you enjoy the new Mother’s Day TV commercial airing this Saturday which will be followed by new TV spots, and print materials, throughout the year. Please click Here to view the press release. On Saturday we will post the new TV commerical on our consumer website -www.ediblearrangements.com -and a link to the site will be put in this blog.

Showing Support to Make Life a Little Sweeter ™

0

As Hurricane Sandy barreled through the East Coast over the weekend and into Monday, leaving many cities and towns reeling, we at Edible Arrangements® saw the storm’s devastating effects firsthand.

Hundreds of local Edible Arrangements® stores and their local communities have been affected by the “superstorm.” And, like in so many other cities and towns, at our corporate headquarters in Wallingford, Connecticut, many Edible Arrangements® employees and their families are still unable to return to their homes today due to storm damage, widespread power outages and severe flooding across the state.

At Edible Arrangements®, we’ve made a commitment to Make Life a Little Sweeter™– to us, that not only means delivering uplifting and heartwarming products, but also offering assistance to those who may need it most. One way that we are showing our support for victims of Hurricane Sandy is by inviting all visitors to www.ediblearrangements.com to learn more about how they, too, can help in times of need.

Find out how you can help support relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Sandy here.

Fresh Fruit Is Now America’s #1 Snack

0

It’s official: fresh fruit is now America’s #1 snack food! One of the country’s leading market research companies, The NPD Group, made this proclamation in a report released last week. Snacking in America 2012, a report based on two years of research, reiterates that a trend of healthy eating and lifestyle choices is spreading across the United States, leading people to choose fresh fruit as a snack more often than any other option.

The NPD Group says snacking, which consists of 20% of all eating occasions in America, has seen a progressive transition away from traditional snack foods (potato chips and chocolate); in fact, Americans now snack on fresh fruit on 10 more occasions (per year) than they do chocolate, and on 25 more occasions than they do potato chips.

As the leader in the fresh fruit gift-giving industry, and the Fruit Experts® for over 13 years, we at Edible Arrangements® are thrilled to have the American appetite’s stamp of approval. Our entire product collection, including fresh fruit bouquets, fresh fruit salads, fresh fruit smoothies and more, is based on that notion of more wholesale enjoyment, for gifting or snacking any time! We’re thrilled to offer products that are embraced by a nation of health-conscious snackers because Edible Arrangements® means Real Fruit. No Kidding™.

On the Road with Franchisees

0

People love to watch the TV show “Undercover Boss” and see how CEOs act when they are out in the field incognito. I could never be a part of that show, because I’m never undercover – I go on the road meeting and visiting with franchisees all the time. It’s one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things about my job! I love to talk with them about how they first heard about Edible Arrangements, and why they decided to buy a franchise. Their stories vary, but they all have a common theme . . . people buy Edible Arrangements franchises because they are passionate about making people happy, and they know they can be successful putting that passion to work for them.

Earlier this year I had the chance to meet one of the youngest franchisees in our system. Right out of college Kristen got a job as a bank teller but she had a dream of one day owning her own business. “One day” came sooner than she expected. Her Dad had received several gifts from Edible Arrangements and began the initial research into the franchise on Kristen’s behalf. Kristen soon learned that a store about an hour from her home was for sale. She took a look, and a week and half later, quit her job, packed up and moved, and began running her Edible Arrangements store.

Kristen admits that when she first bought the business she was a bit “terrified” but she also felt like this was the perfect time in her life to own her own business. This was June of 2009, when many recession-fearing folks were hunkering down, not knowing what the economy held in store. Kristen knew she had what it takes to be successful and went for it! She learned marketing, took accounting courses, and is always looking for new ideas to grow her business.

And she’s moving fast, too! In just two years, Kristen has gone from being a single unit owner to the owner of three stores located in Oakville, Burlington and Milton, Ontario. At first she felt like she was living out of her car, bouncing back and forth from each store to get things done, but she’s quickly become a true enterprise owner. She feels like her employees are “her kids” even though, at 25, she’s hardly a mother hen.

Kristen loves dealing with customers and making arrangements but she really appreciates being in control and charting her own course. She knows she can’t be in three places at once, so she has put great people in each of her stores. She says she’s still a “rookie” in terms of tenure with the system, but she doesn’t feel like one and she makes the big business decisions for her enterprise to prove that she doesn’t manage like one, either.

When I met Kristen a few months back I was stuck by her energy, enthusiasm and drive to get the business to where she wants it to be. She was straightening out the basement on my visit – not an area her customers were ever going to see, but she just wanted everything in order. I was so impressed by that – here was a person who knew that running a business smoothly means everything is in order and operating well, from your products, to your customer service, to the back end of your operation that no one ever sees.

This July I shared Kristen’s story with other franchisees at our annual convention, and honored her work with the President’s Award, the highest award presented annually to a deserving franchisee! And I’ll keep going out on the road meeting and learning about the amazing franchisees in this system – but not undercover!

Faith in Franchising

0

In 2010 Faith joined the Edible Arrangements Franchise System with the Anaheim, CA store. She has a genuine passion for business and recognizes the strong support she receives from her team of Fruit Experts, Roger, Justine and Kyle. Faith has recently added a second store to her enterprise located at 970 N Tustin Street in Orange, CA.

Faith earned her B.A. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and Marketing from Chapman University, and then worked in the staffing, banking and restaurant industries. But she wanted to own her own business, and began researching how to make that happen. She decided a franchise would be the way to go. Franchising allows an independent business owner to experience the rewards of running an enterprise without having to “go it alone” since the franchisor provides marketing materials, national print and television exposure, and brand recognition and reputation. After much searching for the right franchise for her, Edible Arrangements caught her attention. She explains, “It’s a great product and has the successful track record I was looking for. Besides, I love chocolate and what could be better than working with chocolate dipped fruit! Now, I can honestly say that every day I enjoy going to work!”

I Have Just Returned From Muscat,Oman

0

I have just returned from Muscat, the capital city of Oman where I met AlShaima our franchisee in the newest country to introduce Edible Arrangements. It’s always exciting to add another country to the growing lists of places where Edible Arrangements can touch people’s lives, but I was so impressed with AlShaima I couldn’t wait to share her story here.

She is such an inspiration! After studying Business Management at Bahrain University, AlShaima returned home to Muscat to start her own business in 1998. She wanted to start a flower and gift shop. I know the feeling – I got my own start owning first one, and then four flower shops! But AlShaima’s vision was a little different. She wanted to be a full service gift shop, so she offered flowers, balloons, chocolates, wrapping and other gifts. She says she simply opened the kind of store that she would want to shop in, and didn’t really have a business plan or marketing strategies in mind – she just, as she puts it, “thought of it on paper.” I have a feeling that her business schooling contributed more than she might realize, but her ambition, confidence and the decision to just “go for it” were a big part of her success.

That confidence was tested in June of 2007 when her shop was devastated by Cyclonic Storm Gonu. Intense tropical cyclones like Gonu are extremely rare over the Arabian Sea, but this totally unexpected storm made its way from the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Oman where AlShaima’s shop was completely wiped out. With no insurance, AlShaima decided to try working at what she describes as “an annoying job” (she doesn’t say where, out of respect for her former employer) but she soon decided to reopen her flower and gift shop. She cites the old adage, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” when she speaks of Cyclone Gonu, and she is not exaggerating, since the storm caused more than 50 deaths and over 4.2 billion (US 2007 dollars) in damage in Oman.

She soon took over the location next to her store so she could expand, and increased her customer base because the same customers who shopped at the adjacent store now came to her shop. With her new store doing well, she was looking for something new to stay fresh and competitive. When she first saw Edible Arrangements, AlShaima had the universal reaction– “Wow, what is this?” Just as she had when she opened her first business, AlShaima thought, “let me try it.” She says her first week was like a miracle, customers were immediately drawn to the product and I suspect that AlShaima’s warmth and amazing personality helped to bond customer relationships. AlShaima’s daughters attend an American school in Oman, headed by a Canadian superintendent, who was thrilled to see Edible Arrangements come to Oman since she knew EA from Canada. She likes the idea that Edible Arrangements are beautiful like flowers, but environmentally friendly since they are not wasteful.

To celebrate the Muscat opening, AlShaima is donating gross profits from her EA store’s first week to famine relief in Somalia, in cooperation with the Oman Charitable Organization. AlShaima’s connection to the Oman Charitable Organization is close: her father took on the role of CEO of the governmental organization after retiring from the government ministry. AlShaima makes the connection to her work and her father’s this way: “Edible Arrangements is all about giving – that’s why we thought it was important to start our business with a gesture that reflects the generosity of our customers. We also wanted to show our support for and contribute to the valuable work of the Oman Charitable Organization in Somalia in a time of such great need.”

AlShaima keeps busy with her three daughters, aged 10, 7 and 2, her businesses and, after taking some marketing courses, she is now pursuing her MBA from Hull University in the UK. Every six weeks a new study module is flown in to Muscat from the UK. Even though she has built businesses before, she says she’s back to “Square One” with her new Edible Arrangements business. She opened her first store, right next to her flower shop in a busy mall in Muscat, and at the same time was working on her second EA store in the city. And she has plans to open a third store in Salalah, on the southern coast of Oman next year. The lifestyle there is very different: the city is the second largest in Oman, but is more rural and significantly less cosmopolitan than Muscat. There are fewer western influences, English is not spoken in Salalah and the people are quite reserved. Despite the cultural differences in the two locations, AlShaima is convinced that Edible Arrangements will be well received. People are already calling, inquiring when EA is coming to Salalah. With her drive, confidence and business savvy, AlShaima is sure to be successful throughout Oman!

Georgia on Their Mind

0

Husband and wife Kevin and Vanessa have just signed an agreement to open their third Edible Arrangements store. They already have stores in Aiken, South Carolina, and Evans, Georgia, and this new store will be located in Augusta, GA. Kevin and Vanessa used to live in Massachusetts where Kevin was a municipal landscaper and Vanessa was a counselor at a Psychiatric hospital. They were first introduced to Edible Arrangements by Mike and Candi, Edible Arrangements franchisees in Methuen, Tewksbury and Haverhill, MA. Mike and Candi, recipients of the Franchisee of the Year Award in 2008, referred Kevin and Vanessa because they have a good sense of the kind of people who can do well with this business. Kevin and Vanessa were attracted to the brand because they loved the growth opportunity provided by Edible Arrangements. The potential that they saw is bearing out for them as they expand their business enterprise with a third store.

Kevin and Vanessa

The key to their success is their local marketing that focuses on community involvement. Kevin is very active in his local chamber of commerce, supporting new businesses when they enter the market. “I go to every ribbon cutting for each new business that opens in my area, and I present an Expressions arrangement to everyone cutting the ribbon.” Kevin has said that “the best way to get your name out there is to get yourself out there!” and he does so with sampling and strategic marketing. For example, he leaves his brochures in the gift shop of the local hospital, and he brings arrangements to the hospital so the crowds of workers and visitors can see them. The unique arrangements attract attention and people stop to talk to him. And Kevin says he never goes anywhere without a pocketful of brochures. He also wears his Edible Arrangements logoed shirts, hats, and jackets so people ask about his business. “You’d be surprised at the level of saturation a simple thing like that provides. People know me and my stores because of my clothing.” Kevin and Vanessa have contributed to the local food bank, and even provided arrangements every day for an episode of the “Extreme Makeover” television show that built a home for a single mom in need.

We are proud to have such dedicated franchise owners in our system and congratulate Kevin and Vanessa on this most recent addition to their growing enterprise.

Support our Veterans

0

As more and more troops are –thankfully – returning home to their families they are finding that the welcome mat does not always extend to an employer’s door. We want to give back to those who gave so unselfishly so that we can live in peace and prosperity. Edible Arrangements has long had a program for veterans to encourage them to purchase a franchise and be their own boss, but in these times, we felt we had to do more. We decided that the best hand up was to improve upon our existing program, and make it easier for vets to fund the initial purchase of a franchise and be on their way to owning their own business enterprise. That is why we have just doubled our veteran’s discount from $5,000 to $10,000 off the franchise fee. This savings of $10,000 is offered to all qualified U.S. veterans to demonstrate our gratitude for their service as well as our commitment to assisting more veterans make the transition from the military to the civilian and business community.

We have learned over the years that military veterans make great franchisees. They are proven leaders, dedicated and disciplined businesspeople with a drive to succeed – exactly the kind of person we look for to be a standard bearer for our brand. Our veterans proudly served our nation and flag; we are proud to welcome them into the Edible Arrangements franchise system.

According to a recent study conducted for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation, one out of every seven franchise businesses are owned and operated by veterans of the U.S. military, based on U.S. Census data. More than 66,000 veteran-owned franchise businesses in the U.S. provide jobs directly for 815,000 Americans, and generate more than $41 billion in GDP. We are proud to do our part to help more veterans join these ranks of successful business owners and job-creators.

Edible Arrangements Coming to Vancouver, BC

0

Leanne’s sister in Ontario first learned about Edible Arrangements when she drove by a store She decided to stop in and bought an arrangement. She knew that Leanne and her husband Marshall were looking for a business to buy, and Leanne’s sister thought Edible Arrangements was a good fit for them. Leanne’s reaction when she first saw the arrangement was, “Wow” . . . just like our mission statement promises! Leanne and Marshall researched the company and they liked what they learned about the business and the opportunities for growth. As part of their research they talked with some current franchise owners who, as Leanne puts it, “had a lot of great things to say about the franchise.” They plan to open their first store in Vancouver, British Columbia and are excited about the growth potential because there are no Edible Arrangements stores in the area. They plan to sign an agreement for a second store in six months, and they see even more stores in the Vancouver/Richmond /Burnaby area in their future.

Marshall is a realtor and he intends to continue to sell real estate while helping Leanne run the store. He also managed his family’s retail business, so that experience will come in handy in this new venture. Leanne has an accounting and finance background that will be a great asset in managing their enterprise. She also has experience managing her family’s restaurants so she is no stranger to the food industry or the importance of customer service.

Leanne and Marshall have already begun shopping for the perfect Edible Arrangements location to attract walk in customers. Marshall’s real estate experience and Leanne’s sense of the type of place and ambiance that customers want to experience will be big assets for them in their quest for the right retail destination. In addition to our signature arrangements, Leanne and Marshall plan to offer the all natural fresh fruit beverages, sundaes, parfaits and salads in our grab and go product line, Edible To Go.

EA Award Winners Expand Their Opportunities for Success with Additional Stores

Samir and Madhvi have owned the Edible Arrangements store in Bellevue, WA since June of 2009, so when the store in nearby Kirkland became available, they were eager to expand their enterprise to a second store. I was thrilled to see this energetic couple make the move to multi-unit ownership as they are the type of franchisee that is destined to succeed. At this year’s 6th annual Edible Arrangements convention I was proud to present them with the Highest Sales Award for a store open fewer than 24 months.

Store 225 Owners with Tariq

Prior to joining the Edible Arrangements Team Samir worked as a Bank Manager and Madhvi worked as a Portfolio Manager for the same bank in India. After arriving in the US, both worked for several different companies in North Carolina. When they learned about Edible Arrangements through our website, they decided to relocate to the west coast and open their first store. And they’re not stopping with this second store . . . Samir and Madhvi are already working on signing a lease for a third location in Seattle!

Newest Store in UAE: Al Ain

0

I still get energized every time a new store opens anywhere, but there’s a particular thrill that comes with opening a new store in a whole new area of a country. The excitement of bringing Edible Arrangements to a new set of people to be amazed by our products is so gratifying, and I love knowing that another new business owner will be bringing happiness to these customers for years to come.

On January 18 Grand Opening ceremonies were held celebrating the newest Edible Arrangements store in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This store is in Al Ain, the fourth largest city in the UAE, which is located on the border with Oman. Our other store in Abu Dhabi is located on the other side of the country in the capital city of Abu Dhabi on the central western coast of the Persian Gulf, so we’re excited to bring the concept to a brand new region of Abu Dhabi.

This newest store is owned by well-known businessman Mohammed Al Khazraji. H.E. Sheikh Salem Bin Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Rakadh Alamir, Member of the Federal National Council, was a guest of honor at the Grand Opening gala. The store is in a fabulous location at the entrance of the new Jumeirah Hotel which is part of the prestigious Al Ain Mall in the heart of Al Kuwaitat district.

I was so impressed when I first met Mohamed – his business background in IT, food service and the international franchise industry, his education, and his commitment to preserving and enriching his culture. And I consider it an honor that part of that enrichment includes Edible Arrangements. Mohammed’s family has owned an Al Ain based local cuisine catering establishment for the past 20 years. A seasoned IT professional and successful entrepreneur, Mohamed takes his responsibilities towards society seriously as an active member of the renowned charitable organization Wataniya, among others. Mohammed wanted to open an Edible Arrangements business enterprise because he felt that our concept would work well in the niche Arab and Expatriate communities. Now that I’ve met some of them and seen their reactions, I totally agree with his assessment! Mohammed is planning to open more branches in other parts of the district in the coming months, and if the reception he has gotten here is an indicator, his other locations will be just as well received.

Knowing Your Niche –and Expertise

0

The other day I was reading my e-mails when I came across one from an amazing franchisee, Cathy, who owns the Edible Arrangements stores in Catonsville, MD and her latest store featuring the Edible To Go extended product line that opened in Elkridge, MD in February of this year. But before I discuss what makes Cathy a role model for the system, and her incredible public relations and marketing savvy that we all can learn from, her e-mail reminded me of something I wanted to write about previously.

There are many challenges and decisions that businesses, both new and established, face every single day. Whether it is identifying your target market (yes, your ‘customer’ will evolve), staying ahead of the competition, continuously analyzing your company’s strengths and weaknesses, improving customer service, cutting costs without sacrificing quality and service, increasing productivity, figuring out what new markets to enter and when, and how to grow your brand, to name just a few. First, I have to just say that challenges should be welcomed and embraced, not feared. As an entrepreneur you should look forward to what the challenge will be that day –then set out to conquer it. Second and more importantly, make sure you don’t go too far outside your mission, outside your company’s DNA, too soon and introduce new products or services just to grow your market share and increase sales.

Cathy’s pictures in her e-mail of her latest store’s grand opening showcasing Edible To Go Products reminded me of this and sent back some searing memories of a new product Edible Arrangements was considering introducing a few years ago. It was a time when we were contemplating menu options in addition to our world-famous arrangements to drive traffic to our now 1,000+ stores –a precursor to our Edible To Go, grab and go product line we now have. I will not get into all the products and details we were considering but one item we came close to finalizing was fruit sandwiches. Yes, I said it –sandwiches made mainly from fruit, and a few other ingredients. I know most of you are saying to yourselves what on earth were we thinking, but those of you in business know that sometimes an idea takes on a life of its own and grows. Luckily, a mentor to my brother Kamran and I (the importance of having a mentor will be one of my blog entries soon) woke us up to the fact that no customer would buy such a concoction.

The valuable lesson we learned is do not step too far too soon outside what you do and know just to drive sales and reach a goal. A business must look inside itself, perfect what it does and what it is known for, master it and become experts. At Edible Arrangements, we are the fruit experts. We know fruit. We learned from this near mistake and created our Edible To Go extended product line –products made simply from fresh fruit – for customers to come into one of our stores for a healthy, pick-me-up snack such as our fresh fruit smoothies, fruit salads, fruit sundaes, many kinds of chocolate dipped fruit, pineapple pops in many of our signature pineapple shapes dipped in chocolate, and much more. This is all in addition to our signature bouquets. Not all Edible Arrangements stores carry the Edible to Go extended product line -yet, but all stores carry our grab and go items like salads, smoothies and dipped fruit. Yes, we are expanding our menu options, but we are staying true to our roots and our expertise, and the product we know best –fresh fruit and nothing else.

Now that I digressed a little bit, I wanted to showcase Cathy not only because she is one of our most successful and passionate franchisees, but because she is also really good at marketing and staging an event. Case in point, she recently held her grand opening celebration for her new store in Elkridge on April 14. The community turned out in droves. Why? Because she planned, drafted a personal, localized press release, created eye-catching invites, and executed the event perfectly. I couldn’t be more pleased by her professionalism, commitment to her community, customer service skills, and hard-work. Cathy never does anything half-hazardly, nor should you. In business, a customer can see right through imposters and those who simply are not prepared. Lose their trust and you may never get it back. Show them you are prepared, professional and engaging, you will have a customer for life.

Edible Arrangements Partners With Direct Capital to Fuel U.S. Expansion

0

WALLINGFORD, Conn., Oct. 8– Edible Arrangements®, the pioneer and leader in hand-sculpted, fresh fruit arrangements, has selected Direct Capital®, a national direct lender, as the exclusive preferred finance company for the brand. The expanded lending program was developed in response to capital needs to support growth initiatives in 2010 and beyond, and will be used for single and multi-unit development of new stores, store remodels and equipment purchases.

This announcement comes on the heels of Direct Capital’s expansion of their franchise lending unit after securing $100 million from Key National Finance and other conduits and banks in April, and renewing an additional $100 million line from DZ Bank. They have been one of the few, if not the only, specialty finance companies over the last 9 months to secure new capital.

“During a time when it is difficult for franchisees to obtain financing, we’ve expanded our franchise division to better support the industry and help successful brands, like Edible Arrangements®, continue to grow,” said Robyn Gault, Direct Capital’s Director of Strategic Accounts. “The retreat of many lenders from the market has left franchisees with limited options and has driven forward thinking franchisors like EAI to secure relationships that will keep capital flowing through their systems.”

Currently, Edible Arrangements has 929 locations with the goal to reach 1,000 units by 2010. Most recently, the company announced the launch of its new “core and station” store enterprise development program and the company’s evolution into multi-unit franchising. A central component of the new strategy is Frutation by Edible Arrangements, a grab-and-go concept offering customers fresh-fruit smoothies and juices, fruit and green salads, dipped fruit and a variety of other fresh-fruit products.

The Direct Capital program in conjunction with Farid Capital, a secondary source set up by Tariq and Kamran Farid, to provide finance options to franchisees who do not meet the underwriting criteria of the DCC program, will help fuel franchise growth by new and existing franchisees.

“During a recession it’s crucial for franchisees to have access to capital to grow. We are excited to work with Direct Capital to help our brand expand and prosper during these tough economic times,” said Tariq Farid, CEO and Founder, Edible Arrangements, Inc. “We are committed to increasing our footprint into new and existing markets around the world. The combination of this partnership and the launch of Farid Capital Corporation are key ingredients to developing the brand across the globe.”

Tariq Farid, recently the recipient of two Entrepreneur of the Year awards from the International Franchise Association and Ernst & Young in Metro New York, developed and launched Edible Arrangements in 1999 in East Haven, CT, after many years in the floral industry. He learned early that corporate support can make the difference between a struggling or thriving franchise. It is for this reason that Edible Arrangements offers its franchisees comprehensive corporate and onsite level training, unparalleled technology, national brand recognition, extensive support and now, financing.

Edible Arrangements Relishes Rosy Outlook

0

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — What do you do when you’re a purveyor known for pricey, if unique, gifts during a recession? You spend more on advertising — and debunk brand myths.
Leveraging a combination of a national campaign, a unified franchisee strategy and a revised message that caters to consumers’ recessionary concerns, Edible Arrangements International is seeing traction in the area that matters most: sales.

The fresh-fruit-arrangement delivery service earlier this year launched a national campaign, only its second in 10 years, titled “Pass It On.” It promotes the edible bouquets as surprisingly affordable gifts suitable year-round, not just in holiday seasons. Hot Dish Advertising, Minneapolis, handled creative, while Mediacom handled media buying.

The privately held company boasts tripled consumer brand awareness since its debut national campaign in 2008. Helming ad efforts is VP-Marketing Stephen Thomas. Mr. Thomas is a veteran of Burger King, where he served as a marketing director for a multi-unit franchisee, and Subway, where he served as manager-marketing planning and analysis and was part of the marketing team that launched the nutritional campaign featuring “Seven Subs Under 6 Grams of Fat.” He joined Edible Arrangements in 2007 as VP-strategic alliances, overseeing partnerships with entertainment companies such as Disney and Nickelodeon.

Moving into his current role later that same year, he reports to Tariq Farid, CEO, and oversees consumer research, strategic alliances, storefront image, web development, the customer order center, product development, field marketing, advertising development, and media planning and execution. Mr. Thomas won’t disclose the company’s annual marketing budget, but says it has increased each year since 2007, and that “sales have been positive.” In a recent interview with Ad Age, he discussed why consumer feedback is so vital and why price-cutting hasn’t been necessary.

Ad Age: Why launch a national campaign again, and why now?

Mr. Thomas: It’s the evolution of our campaign. This was the year we made significant change creatively in the advertising, but really, it’s designed against the same strategy, which is to increase our customer base and grow sales.
We spent the last couple years trying to educate folks on who we are and what we do. That was 2008’s message, what I like to call emotional education, then last year we evolved that into more of a promotional-type education. We follow the gift-category purchase cycles. Holidays are peak periods for us. So this year has been about, how do we take the insights we’ve gleaned to grow our business base? To acquire customers from the huge gift category requires that we’re in front of consumers educating them on why Edible Arrangements is really a good choice in light of the other options.

Ad Age: What’s your overarching marketing philosophy?

Mr. Thomas: You need to talk to consumers a lot and in a few different ways, regardless of what industry you’re in. You need to keep a pulse on what the levers are. At Edible Arrangements, we know the strengths our product has — it offers the beauty of flowers, but you can actually eat it; we know we score high on freshness and health and quality — [so the question is] how do I bring that to people in a way that convinces them to try it? Those insights come from the customer, in many cases.

Ad Age: Have you had to cut prices in the recession?

Mr. Thomas: We have not discounted but instead we have educated customers that our products are every bit as affordable as flower arrangements, [for example]. It removes the perceived cost barrier because a lot of users didn’t realize we had lower-cost items.
You cannot only eat [our product], you can count on it to be delicious and fresh every time, so that was inherent value we had to make sure we were getting across to consumers, as well.

Ad Age: What media did you use in the campaign?

Mr. Thomas: TV, print and online, primarily. This year for the first time we incorporated a new target and a new medium, which was radio. Our typical target is women age 25-54. And those are primarily the people we speak to most of the year. However, there have been times that our research has shown that they’re not doing a majority of the purchasing. So this year for the first time we targeted men pre-Valentine’s Day. The flight broke Jan. 27 and we came off on Feb. 10.

We advertised on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN the Magazine and ESPN.com. Fortunately for us, all of the pre-Super Bowl hype fell right in the middle of everything, and we used that to our advantage to educate men on Edible Arrangements. Twenty-five percent of incremental orders were attributed to the Valentine’s Day male-targeted media plan in some way.

Ad Age: What consumer research informed your efforts with the campaign, both in terms of creative and media strategy?

Mr. Thomas: We do focus groups a couple times a year and we try to move around the country to get the brand in front of users and non-users. We talk to non-users about why they don’t buy from us, so it helps us, in many cases, uncover perceived obstacles. There was a perception that we were more expensive than we really are. We have our ongoing tracking study; we talk to about 2,400 consumers a year. It helps us measure the market, the overall gift category, both direct and indirect competitors.

Ad Age: To what extent was social media employed in the campaign and general marketing efforts?

Mr. Thomas: We’ve only recently started to leverage what we feel are the benefits of it. It’s an important way to stay connected to our customers. Facebook has been most successful for us. We do use Twitter also and we have a MySpace page, but we use Facebook the most to connect. We’ll ask questions, we’ll post surveys.

In October we launched a Facebook application to grow our user base and market to them. We hit the number in less than four days. Our fan base is at 183,000 at this point. We drove the Facebook customers into our system with a free giveaway, then we gave them another incentive to come back.

Ad Age:Why did you become an upfront advertiser for the 2009 and 2010 TV seasons?

Mr. Thomas: Efficiencies. We did move into the upfront market at the right time given television costs. We wanted to take advantage of Group M’s significant pool of money to buy television. (Media agency Mediacom is part of Group M.)
We were putting more into TV at a time when others were cutting back, and we just came along at the right time with more dollars than ever before when prices were lower, and that helps you establish favorable base rates for future buys.

Ad Age:In the midst of this recession, what demands are being placed on you, specifically, and what are you doing to deliver on those expectations?

Mr. Thomas:I’m responsible for driving traffic that results in growing revenue profitably for our franchisees — all the time. That means we’re always working to beat comp sales from the same week last year. Ultimately, to be successful under this kind of pressure you need to use the best resources you can, which means surrounding yourself with talented and smart staff and agency people who are dedicated and insightful. It also means finding the right mix between data and instinct. So while we may not be winning Clios, if my franchisees’ sales are growing and we’re building our brand successfully, that’s really accomplishing a much more important goal.

I Never Expected It to Turn Out This Way

0

I never expected it to turn out this way. I never expected Edible Arrangements to become an international brand with over 1,000 stores across the world in only ten short years. I didn’t know that by fulfilling my own dream of starting a business I would one day be able to fulfill that same dream for so many others . . . and that my goal of making my customers happy would translate into sharing my idea with hundreds of franchisees who make millions of customers happy. And I was only thinking about having a job for myself, my brother and maybe my parents when we got busy – not creating a successful franchise that would create thousands of jobs. Anyone who is paying attention to the world economy knows that small businesses – like Edible Arrangements stores – are the business world’s job creators.

So, you might wonder why I didn’t start out with these lofty goals. The reason is simple . . . nobody has a crystal ball that will neatly and conveniently lay out their future. Everybody starting a business has dreams and plans of where their business may be 10 or 20 years from now, but the best plans still need to be updated to keep ahead of new trends, customer preferences and technologies. Change is inevitable, no matter how uncomfortable, and a business must evolve if it has any chance of surviving. I confidently believe that Edible Arrangements is where it is today not only because our customers believe in our product and our franchisees believe in our system, but because we evolved as the company grew.

Setting the Record Straight: Early Lessons Learned Paved the Way for Success

To help ensure the sustainability of the brand and the livelihoods of hundreds of franchisees in this challenging economic climate, some difficult, and I admit, unpopular decisions had to be made. I refer to unpopular decisions because, as a result of these decisions, certain unsubstantiated accusations and misrepresentations have been made over the past year in the media. These misrepresentations question our company’s integrity and business practices or allege a violation of contractual rights and legal obligations. These allegations have no merit and therefore need to be addressed and refuted. Yes, our franchise system has made changes over the years to stay ahead of the trends and competition, and will continue to do so, but every change was made with the best interest of our customers and franchisees in mind. I believe the lessons we learned along the way, from the very first store to the one thousandth, have helped shape our culture and pave the way for our success.

In 1999 after years running first one and then four successful floral shops, my brother Kamran and I – with the help of other family members – opened the first Edible Arrangements store. I learned about designing at the floral shop, and it was then I learned the importance technology played in running a multi-unit business operation. Learning about design and technology helped my businesses succeed, but the most important thing I learned in these early days was that the customer is king. We became successful because right away we focused on the customer and did things our competitors didn’t do. When other florists said they couldn’t deliver, we said we could. When they said it was too late to send an arrangement to the hospital that night, we told our customer it wasn’t. Customers learned that they could get great service from my shops, and I learned that to be successful, you have to work when your customer wants you to, not when you want to!

Our fruit bouquets were amazing artistically designed showpieces that made everyone stand back and go “wow” when they saw them. Such a unique product that elicited such an emotional response from people required the perfect company name. The name had to mean something, make an instant connection and grab people’s attention. We drove our friends and family crazy with our ongoing naming debate sessions. Finally, the ah-ha moment arrived, and we decided on “The Edible Arrangements.” Like Facebook did six years later, I decided to drop the word “The” and Edible Arrangements was born. I like to think that there’s another similarity between us and Facebook: we both connect people with friends and loved ones – we just do it with fruit!

Like all new businesses, we struggled for the first few years and did everything we possibly could do to survive. Time didn’t matter as we had to work around the clock just to keep the business afloat. Even though there were days when we had only a few orders to fulfill we kept plugging away, confident in our product and in what we were doing. I kept my focus on the customer – just as I had in those early days in the floral industry when we were outpacing the competition. We firmly believed, as we still do now, that as long as we took care of our customers and exceeded their expectations every single day, they would keep coming back again and again, and spread the word about our business to others. I learned a lot in those early days – stay true to yourself, never give up, constantly look for ways to reinvent your business to stay ahead of the competition, and, more importantly, always be open to new opportunities and ideas.

Franchising? What is that?

In 2000 we received a visitor at our East Haven, CT storefront that would forever change the direction of our small retail business. A motorist stuck in traffic on the Quinnipiac River Bridge on Interstate 95 noticed our Edible Arrangements sign from the highway. Intrigued, he got off at the next exit and walked into our store. Chris looked around, asked about our product and business and then asked a question that never crossed our minds before. He asked if we would consider franchising Edible Arrangements — he was confident the product would be a smashing success. I hate to admit it today but we had no idea what he was talking about. We were just kids motivated by passion for what we were doing and our product. Franchising was never a consideration; in fact, it wasn’t even part of our vocabulary.

Remember what I said earlier about being open and receptive to new ideas. I’m sure glad we were open to suggestions that day. One year later in 2001 the very first Edible Arrangements franchise location opened in Waltham, MA. Fast forward ten years and Chris is now a successful enterprise owner with six Edible Arrangements stores in Massachusetts. In fact, thanks to Chris convincing us that franchising was the way to go, many more franchisees in our system have followed his lead. They built their enterprises one store at a time and are now successful business leaders and CEOs of their own independent businesses.

These storefronts generate local business and are attractive retail destinations for shoppers who want to see and taste our product before they buy. But our franchisees do not have to shoulder all their marketing efforts alone – that is one of the great benefits of being a part of a franchise. Through national print and television advertising, supported by professional advertising and public relations agencies and our professional staff at the corporate office, franchisees have marketing expertise at their fingertips. This national marketing invites customers to find a local store and it also tells consumers about our websites and toll free order number. Our websites, Call Center, e-marketing efforts on social media sites and other business-generating activities are all managed through our system called EAConnect.

EAConnect is the name we use to describe the centralized order processing and related services we’ve been providing to franchisees for years. Among other things, EAConnect delivers orders to each and every franchisee via our national Customer Call Center, our consumer websites and our advanced internal inter-franchise process, which allows stores to seamlessly send orders from one store to any other store in the system. Our direct to consumer e-marketing attracts customers to our popular consumer websites, Ediblearrangements.com in the US and Ediblearrangements.ca in Canada. Online promotions and special offers convert browsers into buyers. Our franchisees can devote a majority of their time generating local business and building relationships in their communities while the corporate office, through EAConnect, delivers approximately half their business to their stores from our custom ecommerce program.

Expanding ecommerce opportunities was just one area where technology helped grow the Edible Arrangements brand. After realizing the importance technology played in the success of our floral business, I knew the same would be true for the success of Edible Arrangements. The software and technology available to the franchising industry at the time were not robust enough to create the franchise system that I envisioned. So, instead of settling for an inferior product, I founded my own company, Netsolace, to provide technology solutions specifically designed to support the unique business needs of Edible Arrangements. As Edible Arrangements grew and evolved, Netsolace was able to provide tech services and products at competitive prices to keep pace with the growing needs of the business – products such as customized touch screen training programs for store employees, a support system for ordering inventory and marketing materials, and a state-of –the-art Store Management System.

We’re constantly improving technology to service the needs of our customers – our franchisees – and since mobile technology is the way of the future we have developed mobile apps for our support services that will be available soon! This mobile application allows franchisees to be in contact with their stores without having to be inside their stores, thus making managing their businesses more efficient, especially for multi-unit owners. For this app we have redesigned our systems to deliver concise, easy to read information about customer orders, employee attendance, delivery status – all the things store owners need at their fingertips to make sure operations are running smoothly.

Customers expect real-time service, and having store information immediately available to the business owner will help ensure that every customer is promptly and exceptionally serviced every time. As the franchisor, taking steps to ensure that franchisees deliver a uniform customer experience is our responsibility; franchisees should expect us to try and develop mobile apps and other technologies that individual franchisees simply could not afford to create on their own. And we are not stopping with this phone app. We’re already at work on an app for tablet devices like iPads and new software to help expedite the in-store ordering process to further improve the buying experience for our customers.

As the system continues to grow, our costs for delivering these technological innovations to franchisees and delivering an amazing experience for our customers are also increasing. Customer preferences and expectations are changing rapidly. Society is quickly evolving and to keep pace technology must change even faster. We must evolve our technology and services to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. Our ecommerce channels must adapt and grow to meet our customers’ and franchisees’ expectations. To support this growth, we will soon implement a 2% fee on all EAConnect orders. This fee, which we have the right to assess, is very modest considering the amount of services to franchisees it will help fund and the revenue EAConnect generates for our franchisees.

Franchising has its own unique benefits, but it’s not for everyone

Franchising may be the right business model for hungry entrepreneurs hoping to become the next great franchisor, a means to attain your own small business, or a good investment opportunity. But franchising is not for everyone. Why? Put simply, it’s not just about you anymore. Every move you make as a franchisor or franchisee affects your customers, and also hundreds of thousands of other franchisees. Everyone in the franchise system must work within a uniform set of standards and operating procedures to ensure the customer receives the same, unforgettable experience each and every time, no matter where they are.

For example, we obviously need to control the quality of the fruit we sell, because that is what our customers come to us for. That’s our business! For consistency, dependability and traceability, we created our Fruit Reliability and Excellence System (we call it “FRESH” – and say the “H” is silent!). Our franchisees use this produce-ordering system for the best quality fruit that is available at all times, and only the most discerning produce distributors with proven track records are eligible to be a part of our FRESH program. We work directly with growers as well, who produce fruits to our exact standards and specifications. When you’re the leader in Fresh Fruit bouquets, your customers expect you to have the best, and that is what we demand from our growers and produce distributors!

Some franchisees may not always agree with every policy, procedure or enhancement to the system. However, since our franchisees are all independently owned and operated, it’s the franchisor’s responsibility to communicate with franchisees and convince them about the validity of any change or decision. It’s a constant balancing act where every decision must be weighed very carefully. What may be good for the system as a whole and for each franchisee may not always be apparent to all at first. It’s not always easy or popular to make the tough choices needed to ensure you stay one step ahead of the competition and keep your customers happy, engaged and coming back year after year. To be successful you must always be thinking ahead, evaluating your weaknesses and taking advantage of any and all opportunities to help ensure your business and products stay relevant.

We recently addressed what we considered to be one of the weaknesses in our system – taking a page from the playbook I had used back in my floral days when we did well by being open when our competitors were not. We extended weekday hours until 7:00pm, so our customers could pick up our products on their way home for an evening meeting or gift. And we opened on Sundays, when people entertain guests and celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other specials occasions. Remember, the customer is king and we need to be there at their convenience –not our own. By now being open 7 days a week, we are meeting the expectations of our customers, attracting new customers and further differentiating our brand from the competition. This decision wasn’t enthusiastically embraced by all our franchisees. But the reality was our operating hours were not customer friendly, and that made us vulnerable to losing customers to competitors.

As a franchisor, we must always strive to make our customers’ lives a little easier by ensuring our product is available to them and our ordering process is as easy as possible. Since our internet business keeps growing, we were able to extend our reach into areas where we don’t yet have stores by using a new consumer website and a shipping program. With DippedFruit.com, we can now ship chocolate dipped fruit to customers who want a delicious fresh fruit product but don’t live near enough to one of our stores for van delivery. DippedFruit.com supports our franchisees – it does not compete against them. Customers who are specifically searching for dipped fruit with various toppings who place an order with Dipped Fruit.com are automatically serviced by an Edible Arrangements franchisee if one services the area. If not, the order is fulfilled and shipped by a franchisee-owned Edible Arrangements shipping center.

Our corporate clients tend to send large quantities of bouquets and boxed chocolate dipped fruit during the holidays or for special occasions, and they often send them to employees or clients all over the country. These orders are often fulfilled by many different stores in our system. To facilitate these corporate orders we created a program through our Call Center so corporate clients can quickly and easily order and pay for their purchases. Once orders are sent to the applicable franchise locations to fulfill and deliver the products, the same exact fee split that applies to all inter-franchise orders is assessed, even though the corporate office incurs considerable expense for advertising to corporate accounts and the additional labor needed to handle the increased call volume.

Where We Are Today

Our humble idea became over 1000 stores in thirteen countries, expanding into India and China, adding to our product line with fresh fruit beverages and fruit salads, and embracing change as a necessary part for business evolution and growth. Even though it may be easier to stay complacent and not risk internal discord, we simply cannot afford to stop and smell the roses. We will continue to change, to evolve, so long as we continue to deliver an incredible experience to our customers and value to our franchisees. As the number of franchisees in our system continues to grow, independent viewpoints and different opinions also grow. Therefore, it is even more imperative that we make an extra effort to work closely with our franchisees to ensure both our goals and interests are aligned and everyone is on board with a new process, procedure or change. For it’s our franchisees that make the brand successful and help bring happiness to our customers each and every day. We look forward to getting our franchisees feedback and participation in many more areas in the years ahead.

Sometimes the things you never expected turn out to be better than you ever dreamed. For me, it was launching Edible Arrangements and seeing how hard working and dedicated franchisees turned one small shop into one really big idea. What will it be for you?

Edible Arrangements Opens in India, China next week

0

Edible Arrangements’ first location in the Republic of India opened its doors on November 10, 2011. Partners Hiten and Avinash signed a Master Franchisee agreement for the development of 20 units throughout India. In partnership with Ishna, Hiten and Avinash oversee development of additional stores in the enterprise while Ishna and her husband run the daily operations in the store.

Hiten operates a live communications agency in Dubai, UAE, that specializes in building brand visibility by producing distinctive, unique high-profile events for his clients. He decided to investigate the Edible Arrangements brand when he saw a van on one of the busiest roads in Dubai and visited a store. I have heard this more than once – that the eye-catching artwork that depicts our unique fruit arrangements attracts curious would-be customers – and the next thing you know, they want to buy not just an arrangement, but a franchise!

Hiten began his journey toward becoming the master franchisee for India by using Edible Arrangements’ services for corporate events for his clients in Dubai. When he saw the reception our products got in Dubai he knew instantly that the unique Edible Arrangements concept would work in India. India is growing at a rapid pace, and the Indian population is becoming increasingly global. He enlisted his longtime friend and associate, Avinash, a real estate developer, to join him in the venture. Together the two friends in Dubai met Ishna, who was interested in the Edible Arrangements brand, and the partnership was formed.

When discussing the culture and people of India, Hiten admits, “A book wouldn’t be enough.” India has 28 states and 7 territories and each of these has different languages, eating habits, lifestyles, dressing, ethnic groups and more. One common thread in India’s rich and diverse culture is the fact that Indians in general celebrate various festivals all year round, not just national or religious festivals but also personal celebrations such as the birth of a baby, a marriage, an anniversary, a housewarming – what we at Edible Arrangements call “the times of their lives.” Indians celebrate in a large lavish manner and the partners believe that this is where Edible Arrangements’ unique offerings will be a fresh change. Hiten adds, “Edible Arrangements provides something other than the usual sweets or delicacies when healthy living is becoming more of a universal change in India. Plus, anything new and unheard of or unseen always works and catches on like fire!” Hiten, Avinash and Ishna believe that establishing Edible Arrangements could result in a revolutionary lifestyle change for people to shift from their usual highly sugared desserts.

I’m excited about bringing the Edible Arrangements concept to India, and in fact, I am on my way to the grand opening celebrations for our newest store in Beijing, our first store in China. Coincidently, this master franchisee was also one who spotted our van when he was visiting in the US. He actually followed it back to the store to learn more about where to buy an arrangement, and after buying one to surprise his wife, she surprised him by suggesting he buy a franchise. Stay tuned for more about the China grand opening in the next week . . . .

Setting Goals

One of my favorite topics to write about is the incredible franchisees who own Edible Arrangements stores. I get so inspired when I speak to these independent business owners and I feel the privileged to be able to tell their personal stories to you, sharing with you their involvement in the community and what motivates them. These talented people are part of the fabric of communities throughout the country . . . they are your neighbors, friends and members of some of the same organizations as you are.

Throughout the year I will continue to share their stories with you, and include my take on what makes them successful. I will also share some of the business philosophies that I, Edible Arrangements and our franchisees follow, as well as timely business, entrepreneurial and franchise news that may be of interest to you.

To me, one of the most important responsibilities of a business owner is to set both short term and long term goals. Whether you are setting sales goals for the day, week or year, goals for reaching out to current customers, or increasing the number of new customers you want to introduce to your product, articulating goals and the benchmarks you need to reach to attain them, is crucial for your success. Recently we announced that one of Edible Arrangements goals for 2102 is to open 125 new stores in communities throughout the country, and in select international markets. We also announced a goal to expand the Edible To Go product line domestically and internationally. We plan to launch some exciting new bouquets this year (Our R&D team forbids me to say more now!) that will build upon the ‘Wow’ experience our products bring to our customers. Here’s the link to our recent press release announcing these goals so you can read more about them.

Lofty goals –sure! Obtainable goals based on research and data –absolutely! I encourage all of you to set high goals for yourself and your business. Without them, you will have no blueprint to challenge yourself and your business, to grow professionally and personally, or to conquer new areas. Dream big, work hard and never lose confidence in yourself.

Inspiration

Those of you who have read many of my previous blog entries know that I strongly believe that anyone can live their dreams so long as they work hard, stay true to themselves, treat others like they are family and be passionate – act with intelligent passion- about what you do. The dream -the American dream – of having the freedom and opportunity to do what you want and accomplish your goals is alive and well in the United States.

Every day I’m awed by the passion and hard work demonstrated by our hundreds of franchisees who operate over 1,000 Edible Arrangements locations in the United States and around the world. They inspire me to keep improving, and I hope their success and stories inspire you to maybe take the first steps of fulfilling your dreams, whether that dream is becoming an entrepreneur and opening your own business, learning a new language, going back to school, or getting involved in public service. Nothing pleases more than speaking with a new franchisee, or any business owner who stops me to talk or person I meet in my everyday life (I meet the most amazing people when I’m ordering my favorite drink at Starbucks), and learning about their background and what inspires them.

We all need inspiration and it’s available to anyone who simply takes a moment out of their busy life to look for it, listen and learn from others. I love every night, after I spend time with my young children before they go to bed, to simply read a biography of someone who has accomplished their goal, watch an informed news show such as Piers Morgan on CNN who always delves deep into the issues when interviewing a guest and always focusses on the American Dream, or read about what make people tick in reputable newspapers, such as the Wall Street Journal, NY Times or USA Today. Learning about what others are doing, what obstacles they are overcoming, recharges me every night.

So, I was humbled yesterday when a story on Edible Arrangements was featuredin USA Today as it perfectly reflected my belief that the dream is alive and well in America, and that anyone can do what my brother Kamran and I did. If my story –the Edible Arrangements story –can inspire just one person to go for their goal then it will have served its purpose. It also gave me much pleasure to see that our very first franchisee, Chris Dellamarggio, who now has multiple locations, was quoted in the article, and another one of our very best multi-unit owners, Tom Stratford (you look marevlous, Tom), was pictured in the story. Why was I so pleased? Because they both took a chance in the very beginning on a new concept to open their very first Edible Arrangements store. They both took the time to listen to their hearts and take that first step in living their dreams, knowing very well that the path before them was not yet clear or guaranteed. They were driven by the belief that they can succeed no matter what and live their dreams so long as they worked hard and were passionate about what they are doing. They found their inspiration –they and all our franchisees give me mine –and I hope you one day find yours and take that first step in living your dreams.
